What would you say is the life span for Fuel injectors. My car is on the 66K mark and as far as I know the injector which I have fitted to my MK4 1.8T Golf GTI at the moment are the factory originals.

The reason I ask is because my car is eating petrol, I am putting in £13 a day, and doing about 25 miles and it's all go's. I have checked with VAG COM and there are no faults, I changed the Fuel Filter last year, and the MAF is working fine, I have also checked the Lambda probes with VAG COM and they are working correctly. Would it be worth changing the injectors to see if that might be the problem?

Any advise welcome.

Sounds more like a leak in the tank! biggrin
It must be pumping some serious black smoke or filling the sump full of fuel if the economy is that bad.

There must be other symptoms (smoke, poor performance, etc) ?

If the injectors were over fueling to that degree, you'd have all sorts of other issues. Unlikely I'd say.

Cheers,

FT.

This is what is driving me crazy, the car run's fine, but it is just eating petrol, The only other thing I have noticed, is when pushing on hard, going for a quick drive I do get this slight burning smell in the car, which I have no idea where it's coming from. But this smell only happens sporadically.

You have noticed the cost of fuel these days haven't you?

I mean, only a few years ago I could fill up my Land Cruiser for Euro 70, it now costs Euro 140 for a full tank.

You can see what's going on here, it's not the injectors.

I'd like to think most injectors would last 600,000 miles, nevermind 60k !!!!

You say it runs fine, clearly it doesnt. Most obvious thing to check, is that the lambda sensor is working fine. Also a possibioity the airflow meter could be suspect too.

Just because there arent any fault codes, doesnt mean there arent any faults !!

What MPG does that work out as, and what is the typical MPG for this model? What sort of driving are you doing (steady cruise, sat in traffic etc)? Is it 25 miles in one go, or lots of short trips?

That's about 27l/100km, which I think equates to around 10mpg!

Well £13 pounds get me about 10-litres, as for driving style, normal driving, not hammering it everywhere at all, I cannot afford to if you know what I mean. For this car you should be getting 26 28-mpg around town, and 31+mpg on the motorway. I fill like I am running a bloody 6L V8.

Faulty injectors would be pretty low on the list of things to check for, but if it's bugging you then you can pull them out and get them cleaned and tested. There's no need to replace them unless they're actually faulty. I'd suggest you look for problems elsewhere in the engine management system first though, because there are lots of faults that would result in over-fuelling and that seems more likely to me.

Sometimes they can be not working fine and not throw anything in VAG COM.

A lot of the time I'd guess....

Unless you know what sort of airflow readings it should be giving under different driving conditions.

You'd think manufacturers would build more reliable airflow meters. They seem to have a huge failure rate !!!

I now that the MAf does not throw up error code all the time, I manages to do a log test for the MAF. But I still have some test to do.
