I test drove one and actually really enjoyed it! I'm used to poky 4x4's though. Don't expect a sportscar experience, it's got loads of body roll, dull steering and pretty low levels of outright grip but the engine's a lovely grunty thing.

It's not going to cover ground as quickly as a hot X5/Cayenne T/ML63 but I'd suggest it's maybe got more character and is a whole load cheaper. It's going to depreciate faster than an F14 in a flat spin but then all these things do... laugh

Try it, you might enjoy it. Some people will never "get" it but treat it as what it is and you'll be ok!

Well summed up Jolly Green. - I'm about to sell my Cerbera - i've still got the Range Rover, so I'm looking for a good compromise. I was thinking Cayenne Turbo or similar but for the kind of money these things are going for I could potentially get one as well as a more 'sporty' car (no wait that's not what the missus was telling me we needed to do!!)

Business is booming thank you, in fact it's all a bit out of control at the moment - more work than I can shake a bevy of sticks at!

I have to say, bias aside, granted that its almost new, but Cayenne Turbos are around the same money now, and that's where I'd spend my money - better handling, will actually go offroad if you ask it nicely, and will offend bystanders with its badge, let alone its C02 output.

Not LR territory by a long shot, but more capable than one would expect... rather vague, and I'm purely going on the experiences of a pal who greenlanes periodically who's been surprised to see one keep going when lesser cars (not LRs obviously) would have got stuck. Also the mags seemed fairly impressed that it wasn't just about silly onroad stuff, but a bit like LR they had managed to keep the 4x4-ability whilst making it mad onroad too.

Actually, I seem to recall some of them being used in a Mongolian rally? Not the sort of offroading we see much of in the UK but a pretty good indicator of the inherent strength of the things...

Was talking once to a dealer about these once when my previous car (Chrysler) was being serviced. Said he managed to get the fuel consumption readout down to 4mpg on one spirited test drive!

Doesn't surprise me! I would think you'll be doing well to average 20mpg in normal driving.

Well they're based on the Touareg so should be good. VW were aiming to equal the Range Rover's offroad ability while designing the Touareg and the cayenne is only slightly behind it.
