New Shape XK - Any Good (Advice Needed)
Discussion
Hi all,
My parents are looking to change their 911 C4 (996) for something a little newer and are considering an 18-24 month old XK, either coupe or cab. For those of you that own one, can you provide some info on what its like. I'm particularly interested to find out about the reliability and also how it compares to whatever you had previously. My father used to run a Jag garage a few years back so we often got to play with the old XK and XKR, how does the new one compare?
The other car they're considering is a 997 cab, any thoughts on how they compare would also be great.
Cheers,
Mike

Owned the previous XKR (4.0ltr and 4.2ltr) plus the new 4.2 aluminium XKR. Chose the new XKR over the 997S as the Porsche is a sports car all the time and the XKR is a luxury Sports GT. It is far more involving than the outgoing model. Very lively and can take the twisties nicely, has loads of power and makes all the right noises! Plus on the upside you can sit in it for hours and cruise quietly on the m-way, something you can't do in a Porsche.
Reliability is excellent (always win the reliabilty award in USA for the past few years!) there were a few gremlins with the very first XK's and XKR's, but that is to be expected with a brand new design. These have all been addressed as far as I am aware, but nothing mechanical, just electrical.
The XKR is far better value for money than the XK. Make sure you get one with the lux sport interior. Cab is a very sexy bit of kit. You should also beable to pick them up for quite good money.
All in all, buy the Jag over the Porker is my vote.

I moved from a 997 Carrera S to a new XKR. They are absolutely fantastic cars - a very good compromise between speed and comfort in fact. As there are not that many around, you get a lot of people looking at you as well if you like that sort of thing.
I'm actually selling mine sadly and judging by the dealer offers, you should be able to get yourself a bargain. Good luck!
