Thinking of undertaking an engine rebuild on my M3 Evo, the VANOS unit, went and when I was driving along I could suddenly smell both petrol and oil in the cabin.
Tried to get home and the engine seized on me at the lights now it just won't turn over.
Took it to one mechanic who showed me that two of the pistons aren't moving when turned from the crank and also one of the CAMs, its the right one as you look at it head on which I believe is the inlet CAM.
Any suggestions, as to what I should do, I had the engine from new and its only done 50K and don't really wanna take on another engine where I don't know its history ........ unless I have to of course .........

Vanos works on oil pressure and now your engine is seized. Sounds like you've been running with too little oil for quite a long time

If it has checked properly and it has siezed etc the first thing I would do is to see what damage has been caused.
The cylinder head needs to be removed to see whats what.If for instance the camshafts, followers and bearing caps are ok then the head will more than likely be re-usable.

The pistons will need to be removed, bores and crankshft checked for damage...You may just get away with a block and pistons..Still costs a bit but cheaper than the engine.

I tend to follow the same rule as BMW and thats 3 major component failures before engine replacement(head, crank and bore).Otherwise it should be repairable.

You also have scope to bore out and modify

Will be removing the cylinder head in the not to distance future to see what's what and would like to know where to look if I do need an engine.
