Chap I work with has an M5 Estate fully loaded. Cost him over £75K. Now 6 months old he wants to change it. Been offered £48K for it. Hmmm, must resist.

He must be earning some good money - that's one hell of a hit on the depreciation!!!!!

These tales of depreciation are getting mind-blowing!

A £27k (36%) hit in 6 months!

M5 tourings are great value at the moment - very nearly bought one over my RS4. My worry is I think they will carry on depreciating heavily as no-one really seems to want them.

Did he say why he didn't like it?

He loves it but is doing big miles in it and finds that it is a very intense car even when only running at 400bhp. So I think he feels that he uses it as a cruiser most of the time and it isnt great at that and he rarely uses that paddles and the power etc I think he finds it draining. He has had an M6, various 911s etc... so it isnt like he isnt used to cars that have some intensity, he seems to think this is just that bit hardcore for everyday relaxed useage particularly when driving 200 - 400 miles in a day sometimes.

200-400 miles per day? Jeez, with current fuel prices and the M5's thirst, he must be putting close to £100 of fuel in per day right? Talk about a money sieve, close to £100 a day in fuel and £27,000 depreciation in 6 months!
Feel sorry for the people who bought them to be honest, those are huge sums of money and that's not even including maintenance on the thing either.

£100 day in fuel for 6 months, plus 27k depreciation.... a whopping £45k running cost for 6 months, before insurance and consumables!

Indeed, and to think I was pissed off at losing £200 on my Golf diesel in a year! biggrin

Hey Gazzab
With that sort of depreciation, it makes running a Cerbera seem very cheap wouldn't you agree!

The thing is, that's all the car should have cost in the first place. Even allowing for VAT, M5's (saloon, estate isn't offered in the US, but that doesn't make much difference to the price) are £50K new in the US.
BMW must laugh their heads off when someone in the UK buys one.

It doesn't matter. These cars are so good that they are a bargain at list price. At <50k, they are a steal.

They are astonishingly fast.. Forget 0-60. It's all about the realm beyond that. There they are sovereign. A 997 simply cannot cope with a rampaging M5 between 200 and 250 km/h.

So it's completely pointless buying one of you're ever going to drive it on public roads in the UK?

And where are you going to be racing at those speeds in the UK? OK, you'll 'wink wink' but one day you'll get busted at those speeds and your professional career is down the toilet.

Jake.

Yeah, my heart's bleeding for those folks that can splash 75k on a new M5 too.

Shall we start a whip-round? biggrin
