If there is one out there please let me know I just pulled out my 91 mr2 and still is a great car to drive but would like to have sixth gear to drop the rpms on freeway.
Thanks Larry

Never been done yet...

However, get yourself the final drive from a Celica ST205.. Drops straight in.. Can't remember the change in gearing but we've fitted several for high speed cruisers...

He could buy another car for that.

Final drive only about £200 from Toyota.

OK, dug out some paperwork..

Correction, not ST205 - should be ST165 10/87-08/89.

MR2 SW20 Turbo final drive ratio = 4.285
Celica ST165 final drive ratio = 3.933

Part numbers required:

3.933 Output Shaft 33321-20120
3.933 Ring Gear 41221-12240
3.933 Oil Pump Gear 33407-12011

The only thing you will need to do is reshim the output shaft bearings.

Errr, is this for an N/A or Turo Mr2?

If it's for turbo, above is correct, if it's for N/A you need the ST162 N/A Celica box bits.

PeterG are you the man always on the phone to my boss?

It's the ST162 final drive you need then.

Oops, i assumed for a turbo. My bad. The couple we have done have been for 450BHP+ 1/4 mile cars looking to increase their gearing.

Now then Oliver, depends on who your boss is! Names that come to mind are Brian or Gareth??? If it helps, i run an MR2 business in Yorkshire called SBITS.

If you want to add an inexpensive 100 hp to your car you'll need to swap in a turbo lump and a grainger valve. Or 100bhp shot of NOS, but that's st.

If you just want a longer 5th for cruising, this is something we looked at for ages on TwoBrutal, you want the 5th gear from a 2.0 Diesel Carina, the exact models are in that thread.

If you get a rev1 gearbox then you get slightly shorter 1-4 and then the longer 5th, so either keep the acceleration nuts with that setup or do the 5th gear and the ST162 final drive and lengthen it right out.

Throw in a UK Mk3 LSD aswell and you're laughing.

Sorry Peter, should have said, me boss is Woodsy.

I know they offer a sixth gear for gsr integras all it is is adding a gear on the shaft and breaking the stopper tab allowing you to sift over one more gear I was hoping for something like that for my mr2

Haven't heard of that i'm afraid, have you got details of the company who does that on the ITR's?

What is it you want the 6th gear for, is it simply cruising?

My moneys on it being to try and distract them from it being a shameful n/a struggling to move under its own power with the horrible us spec 5s-fe lump crippled with emissions equipment.

Of course I could be wrong smile

olber yes I want it for crusing when im doing 85 @4000rpms I would like to see it drop to 18-2k. For the other goof ball I dont want to wait for a turbo to spool I want old fashion horsepower at any given moment.

You'll be wanting a Supercharged V6 then, that will do exactly what you need it to.

If it's for an 2.0NA engine and u want that sorta rpm/mph then go for the Carina Diesel 5th gear, will get you a bit closer. If still nto enough, get the ST162 Final Drive and lengthen the lot.

I hope you live somewhere flat!

If you manage to get the gearing that high you'll be changing down two gears at the slightest hint of a gradient on a 2.0 n/a.
