The first time I gave mine a clean, our black and white tom jumped on the bonnet and slid down toward the fans - you can imagine how the claws sounded on the paint. Rest assured, I de-catted the car pretty sharpish!

Sorry, couldn't resist that - but it's true! He did this really graceful double backflip and landed perfectly.

Why would anyone want to do this.

Road legal issues aside?

All catalytic converters deteriorate over time and eventually they stop doing the job they were designed to do.Sometimes this happens very quickly in the harsh environment of the speed 6 engine! So with the £700 replacement cost of each one (and there are two) by-pass pipes at about £80 each seem a good idea, and just replace the cats at MOT time. Other than that I don’t think there would be much advantage. As for legal issues who is going to check your emmission levels at the side of the road.

Just seen this in general gassing www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=56068&f=23&h=0 so maybe not such a good idea,

Nick

Removing the cats sounds good, but is there no effect on the engine management? I would have thought the cats produce back pressure, take them out and there may be a loss of power.

Mine and my brother's Tuscans were de-catted for a period of time.

V loud, we had CCC exhausts too, so you can imagine the sound...

We found that the cars ran and pulled smoother than before too.

Did you get an MOT check done with the cats out ?

I'm considering this as even with my sleeved pipes the exhaust note is still pathetic. Also now my car is 3 years old it is well out of the factory warranty period.

I didn't have the car long enough for MOT time to come around. My brother did though, it's pretty easy, on a ramp, metal plate off, cat's out/back in.

Sleeved and de catt is nice (louder and lovely @ 3k rpm) CCC & de catt is awesome though! I had sleeves first but bought CCC very soon after.

Thuanjojo and GI Jnr,

Were you engines re-tuned slightly after removing the cats ?

I would have thought removing the cats would effect the back-pressure in the exhaust, which might require re-balancing the engine etc

no re-tuning required apparantly. if anything ,i found that the car ran better with them on.seemed to pick up quicker and ran smoother on acceleration.
