BMW 523i SE - Climate Control Query

Hi All

I own a BMW 523i SE (1999 year). I have noticed the following:

The temp gauge in the display console below the speedo always shows -40c and on odd occasion goes switches to -50c and then goes back to -40c.

Secondly the climate control temp setting lowest point is always 16c is this correct?

Lastly the car is always blowing hot air. Even when i switch the air con on!!

Help! Any ideas what may be wrong?

i think the lack of heat thing may be to do with the fan clutch. seem to remember reading something about that.

on my 328i of the same year the lowest setting is also 16c so i assume that's normal.

Air con might need re-gassing?

Faulty switches sensors etc...

16 degrees is as low as the Climate goes in my 96 523i SE aswell.

Thanks guys - what about the -40C - is that the ambient temp sensor not functioning properly? Could that hence be the reason why I am not getting any cold air?
