E46 M3 convertable vs 335 convertable
Discussion
Currently looking at a 3 series convertable option as a long term keeper. I am torn between an E46 M3 and the new 335 convertable.
Whilst I do like the security of the hard top and I like the styling of the new convertable as the old rag top has quite a heavy 3/4 look, I do not like the new 3 interior anywhere near as much as the old model.
Also from a power and driving perspective a late E46 from 2006, I would imagine would be significantly better than the 335 is that a correct assumption.
The car will be used for continental touring as well as some running around in the UK.
Given there is not a huge difference in price between a late E46 with low miles and the 335 which would the forum advise as the better long term option.

Whilst the twin turbo 3 litre engine in the 335 is hugely capable, there's still not quite the same connection to the driver as with the E46 M3. A lot of people reckon the E46 M3 is the last car that BMW made with true driver involvement and feedback. Having said that, this may make your touring more tiring. I've driven the 335, 335d and E46 M3 and they're all great, but the M3 is the most visceral.
I completely agree re the interiors - the E9x series are not a patch on the E46 (save for the thicker steering wheels and push button starts). The seats in the E9x models are worse than the E46 sports seats too, imho.
It all boils down to your usage. If the continental touring is what you'll be doing most of then the 335 will be more reliable and a less tiring to drive. If you want some proper excitement in a classic then the M3 takes it for me. There are a lot of aftermarket options available for the M3 too, if you're into that sort of thing.
My choice? E46 M3.
