7 series auto box problem - stuck in 1st

Just bought a 1996 728i as a project car and it wont budge from 1st gear. The gearbox filter & oil has been changed, but it hasn't made any difference. Has anybody ever ventured into the workings of an automatic gearbox? Or any ideas on my problem?
