Chances are that it does not work! - I'm on at least the third, first two were warranty items, the third BMW put in 50% and windscreen then (genuinely) cracked so insurers coughed up the rest without affecting NCD. It's been a year since it was last fixed, so it must be due to go again.
If it's for auto-wipers it works thus (if they're the same as on the E39):
1)With the wiper stalk in position 1 (i.e like "Intermittent Wipe" on a car without auto-wipe)
2)Start the car
3)Move the stalk one click in any direction
4)Return stalk to position 1
5)Auto-wipe is now set
6)To alter the sensitivity of the auto-wipe function move the knurled switch on the stalk. Top position is most sensitive; bottom position is least sensitive.

Lovely looking car, what are those alloys? Look like the ones you would get on a E39 540i / E38 740i. Bit Alpinaesque.
they are indeed alpina wheels...came as standard on it. may have been an optional extra but im not sure. having a look around it today i noticed how wide the rear wheels are! god im not looking forward to buying new tyres....255 wide!thanx for the tip on setting up the wiper system...ill be giving that ago...if it dont work ill be goin to bmw for them to figure out.
Why do people say 'almost all the options ticked' to describe cars where that isn't the case by any stretch of the imagination? I've no idea why but thats a pet hate of mine
And they are not Alpina wheels, either.
Still, other than that, it's an absolutely lovely car. Just not one with Alpina wheels and 'almost all the options'.

At this angle they look like Style 32's - a good, genuine BMW wheel which was standard fit in 17" form on the 328Ci.
However I'm pretty sure the rears should be dished especially if they've got the wider tyres on. I might be wrong but this is certainly the case on the Style 32's on the 5 Series

The E46 auto wipers are slightly different - the first position on the wiper arm is intermittent. On intermittent, the first (lowest) position on the knurled knob is for auto-wipe. Thereafter it's varying degrees of intermittent speed.
Dave - nice car by the way. Get it into a BMW dealer ASAP to make sure the rear subframe area floorpan hasn't failed/isn't failing. It's an FOC fix by BMW if it has...

Yep, they are Type 32s - a neighbour has them on her Compact However I'm pretty sure the rears should be dished especially if they've got the wider tyres on. I might be wrong but this is certainly the case on the Style 32's on the 5 Series
