Get an accountant.

Once you start trading, you have three months within which you MUST contact HM Revenue and Customs and notify them that you are running a business.
The Revenue have a general contact number in the telephone book.

I'm in the process of setting up a business.

I can recommend Business Link. I had a free one hour consultation that was actually useful, not the government sponsored waste of space I was expecting. On the back of that I paid £99 for a three day business setup course: Useful info, half a day talking tax, great meeting people in the same situation as you are. The feeling of confidence on the last afternoon was worth the admission fee.

I bought the Lloyds small business book. It was pretty useful on the basics, gave a bit of a feel for marketing etc.
