Has anyone done this, or can anyone recommend anyone who could do this or help me do this. I have a new cam to go on and it requires that I change the valve springs and set the installed height of the springs to match the requirements of the cam. The engine is a 944 turbo 8v.

There are valve spring compressors available which hook under the bottom of the spring instead of reaching under the head - these enable you to remove the spring in situ. You need to stop the valve dropping into the chamber, the usual techniques for this are either stuffing the chamber full of rope via the plug hole ("rope trick") or connecting an air line to the plug hole and holding it up by air pressure.

And if the piston is at TDC then it will not fall far anyway..

Before you assume you can get away without removing the head, do a quick check on the installed length of the springs right now. If you need to lengthen any of them by more than a few thou you will need the head off to do the machining.
