Just seen a Cat C M5 2005. I know about the categories and risks associated having owned and sold a cat D car.

Thoughts on buying. BMW inspection??

It looks to be up at 10-15% less than book.

Grateful for any views. Have a DB7 Vantage right now and need something a bit less cramped!

Cheers

Scott.

There was one knocking around for a whisker under £30k recently, which is nowhere near cheap enough considering an AUC car was advertised at £29,995.

I would have thought at least 40% below book price at the very least

Needs to be 25k or lower I would have thought...BMW dealer had one with 50k on the clock for 28995 which includes the warrenty..walk away unless they are willing to do a better deal.

I would have thought to write off a 2005 car it must have needed some serious repairs that would have involved key structural areas.
If it was repaired properly then it could be a good buy at the right money but the big problem is the "IF" bit.
A 3 year old car on a Cat C is a whole different kettle of fish to a 10 year old car on a recent Cat D.

Is that the CatC that was "fresh water damaged" rather than accident damaged? I just wonder how much electric damage has been done? I imagine it's had a new interior too. The car really needs to be £22k to make it worth considering and even then I'd spend the £6k more on one that wasn't on the register.

cat c is structural damage and I'd avoid.

Cat d is beyond ecconomical repair. My m3 is cat d. But this was when the car was 8 years old & worth 10k. As the insurance only approve if the estimate is 60% of the cars value or less then a 6k bill would have writen it off.

Sounds a lot but the smg pumps £3k so a very minor knock wrote it off

Due to the floods here in northern ireland recently quite a few BMWs came in to my local stealer water damaged. Apparently anything above sill level was pretty much an insurance write off as so much of the electricals now run through the car at that level. Apparently its not even the immediate impact thats the problem, its that problems due to water damage could take months or even years to manifest.

It's not just electrical why they write off water damaged cars especially flood damage. It's also on health and safety grounds as flood water is usually contaminated with sewage or other nasties even to a small degree. In fact because of this risk I thought major flood damage was treated the same as major fire damage and classfied as Cat B (only fit for spare parts).

Thanks all for the replies - very helpful.

It's up at £30k which is way too much. I haven't yet had confirmation of what the damage was but reading some of the M5 price posts on here, I don't think it's a goer unless I get really stupid money for my Vantage. Thanks all ur help.

Cheers

Scott.

Just don't bother and walk away. However, if you do want an M5 at a really good price just wait till the New Year, you'll save alot of money and headaches if you just wait afew more months.

STICK WITH THE VANTAGE - one of the most beautiful cars of all time in my book. I have a client who has one and it's embarrassing watching myself drool each time he comes in!!

You pay peanuts, you get monkeys.

Absolutely no point buying a cat c/d of that value.

Would be different if it was a £1000 golf, but not a £30k M5 that has more electronics than most cars.

Who knows what the damage was and how bad and to be honest, you have no idea the standard of the repair!

Quite right all - gave it a big miss and went back to a facelift M3 SMG cab with CSL alloys, immaculate and fully loaded - what a result - love it. Thanks for all the advice.
