I try not to look at my mpg around town as I just can't help but open the windows and blip the throttle.
However, I've just done a brim to brim calculation/experiment
This was based on 260 miles of a late night dash from the West Country. Using my own private A roads and motorways which closely resembled the A361 the A303 and the M3, I drove the entire route at nothing less than a licence revoking pace.
This was followed by 50+ miles of commuting/crawling around W London at <15 mph
The air-con was on constantly and I run fatter than recommended non-RFTs at fairly low pressure. Also had two passengers and the rest of the available space packed with camping gear.
The result?
29.8mpg
It's a non ED model too.

Best I achieved was a 360 mile round trip to Swindon last month. Took it steady all the way down the M6/M5 as traffic was heavy but flowing. Arrived in Swindon showing 43.4 
Heavy traffic on the 5 hour journey home reduced my average to 38.8
Daily commute (16 miles each way - 10 on free flowing A-road) averages about 35, and the route allows plenty of opportunities to stretch it's legs.
Overall consumption for 9000 miles since getting the car (based on keeping track of all my fuel business use) is 33mpg
It's very impressive IMO for the performance available, and is probably one of the most economical cars I've had

so your mpg is really good. I reckon if you do a lot of urban stuff ,have the fun of a petrol,not a lot in itOn a similar note I was idly musing to myself as I reset the OBC the other day that in my last motor (an A3 TDi) I used to get 35ish around town and in my 130 (nearly double the power !) I got 28 on the last tankful (all town - average speed around 20mph) 
If you factor in the price differential betwen petrol and diesel it starts to become a bit of a no-brainer...

Recent trip from Devon to the East Midlands (about 220 miles) with an even mixture of tedious stop-start motorway congestion, c.70 mph cruising and periods of extended hard charging at close to maximium leptonage resulted in a very pleasing 33mpg.
My regular short commute (town) gives me around 28mpg. In my previous car (by coincidence a Focus ST) I used to get 21mpg.
Once I saw 45mpg after a 60mph motorway journey.
Tonight I took my 130i out for a good thrashing on some quiet roads - windows down, savouring the exhaust note at 6500+ rpm through the gears and engaging in tail-out silly buggery on damp roudabouts. I still couldn't get the thing below 25mpg.
Truly an astonishing bit of kit.

These are indeed fantastic numbers! Are these also possible in a 'modern' 3 series? Ok you may lose a couple of mpg through weight but could I really get 30+ without much effort?
The current 330i's official figure is c.39mpg combined compared with 34mpg for the 130i. The 3 series has an even newer version of the engine with more enviro-trickery and few more bhp to boot. Can't go wrong! Details here:

Stop telling everyone how good the 130i is ITS RUBBISH (hoping that prices fall further so I can get one at bargin price as its really a fabulous car - heard a few powering away from the traffic lights and boy that engine note is something else.)
Been driving my fiat Coupe on the M ways commuting a lot recently some 600miles a week and for about 3 weeks I stuck to no more than 60mph and my brim to brim was 38mpg.
Since then got bored and fuel price has dropped and now driving at normal motorway speeds, am now getting 35mpg - its official combined is 28mpg.... so Im smashing that and I really dont hang about these days, in fact Im pretty much on their extra urban cycle which is frankly amazing.
Given the 130i has a higher combined than mine then Im pretty sure I'll get much higher in it.
Note if Im getting 35mpg now out of mine then the equivalent diesel will need to be getting 40mpg (or in my eco driving mode 42mpg).

Prices seem very reasonable currently - they are starting at £12k for a 55reg car... that would have been a £27k+ car 3 years ago OR buy a Focus ST... hmm which would be similar cash for the same age... but your buying then a 10k cheaper car than the 130i would have been.Average since i've owned the car (it's a non ED version) is 26.6mpg (but then i don't hang about in it).

If you only want/need one car then the 130i is a great all-rounder. All right, they aren't massive in the back, but, let's be honest, how many people REALLY need to carry around 4/5 6-footers and/or loads of furniture?
What else offers such a blend of performance and economy for the money?
As far as current pricing is concerned, last month I paid £18.8k for an 8-month old car with 1700 miles from a main dealer. It has a few decent options (prof radio, bluetooth, folding mirrors, sun protection glass, lumbar support, er...) and a new one to my spec would cost £29,160.
Yet, despite all this, my favourite aspect of the car is the little lights under the door handles that look lovely at night against the Le Mans blue paint...
What else offers such a blend of performance and economy for the money?
