One of my 2 cooling fans has died. I am hoping it is just brushes, it tries to start but then dies.

It is a Smiths motor - does anyone know where I can source spares or a working one (new or 2nd hand) if I can't fix it.

I would like to keep the 2 fans (I know some have a single one) for redundancy.

Cheers

What's the set up on yours then? That is, is there a chance you could use a simular replacement?
Recently gone through the failed fan malarky. In the singular on the 400.

I have 2 fans side by side on the engine side of the rad. It appears to be the original set-up.

My 350 was (an early one). No cowl and the fans were fixed to a sort of bar assembly top and bottom. It looked like it was easy to fit another make should you need to. Suppose it depends how old and if they are made anymore. I found the makers and agents of the fan that failed on the 400 but they no longer made the same unit as the one that died on mine. Apparantly the factory still had them but at a price.

It does sound like a stuck or worn-out brush, Danny, but it may just be a dirty commutator as I'm sure you're aware...

Outside chance it could also be that some of the windings are open-cct.

Well I am not suer if I am in luck or not.

I dropped the spoiler / rad and dismantled the motor and yes Ian was right - a sticky brush and a dirty commutator. The motor now runs fine (although it feels a little stiff since I have dismantled it). However the brushes looked 2/3 worn.

So I popped down my local breakers (which only has a third of the cars it used to have) and there is a complete SD1 Vitesse - hmmmm, window motors, a new trottle pot - well the list goes on and on. But it is locked and I am told it has been sold as a complete car - never mind.

So I then looked at the rad fan and heater fan of every car in the yard. There is a P5 Rover that has a similar looking motor on its heater blower - but when I dismantle it the brushes are as worn as mine.

Decision time - do I put my repaired motor in and hope it lasts or try and source one? Well the sun is shining and it may be the last TIV weather for ages - so it is back in, fingers crossed.

Danny

PS Has anyone got any old Smiths Industries motors, working or not that I could pinch the brushes out of - in that box as the back of the garage?
