...is on my shortlist for an upcoming change in my daily driver.

My post on the Focus ST and its rivals in General Gassing has been going for 8 pages or more, so can I have a VW orientated discussion on here.

What are your thoughts on the MkV GTI and what should I be looking out for in particular when it comes to buying? Who has one and how have you found ownership?

I've seen a couple of 3 door standard cars around my £11k budget, both with approx 45k miles on the clock.

If there's 8 pages of mpg concerns and "image" in here aswell, I'll cry.

If economy is important, buy a 1.2 Corsa.

If image is important, don't buy a VXR or an ST with the Dodgey Viper stripes.

It's quite simple really. Quite why you need 8 + pages of opinionated, biased and unsubstantiated comments to make your mind up is a mystery to me. Once upon a time, it was common place to test drive cars, but then forums came along. Then suddenly people lost their decision making ability ....

Ok, calm down. If you do not believe in forums don't use them. I don't need pages and pages of other peoples opinions to help me make a decision, but I like to hear what they have to say. This is a motoring community and in general the users of these forums like to talk about cars and motoring, so where is the harm.

I am not after economy, but if I can get similar performance and smiles per mile from a car which will cost me several hundred pounds a year less than another, then that may sway my decision. Reading reviews in magazines is one thing, hearing direct from owners what their running costs and ownership experience has been like is altogether more reassuring.

Not drove it, but I know someone who has one, its a really nice car, but the interior, is a bit.... ergh.

If you can live with that then I think it would be a great car.

Mind you it wouldn't stop me owning a nice old impreza with the poverty spec interior!

Go for it I say.

Pokey, Agile, practical, tuneable, good image, reasonable residual values, good reliability record, good choice of spec and colour, good value.

I've driven a few (standard, DSG and Edition 30) in various states of tune and have loved every one.

I'll be driving an ST today so will come back with a comparison view!

We have one. Its a very good car, quicker than people think (but probably not as quick as a Focus ST). The interior is very nice, with a few extra things over the std Golf V, even the Golf GT Supercharged 1.4 thing. Better spec computer, nicer seats/headrests, lovely grey headlining material. Lots of space inside. Various mags have said how VW want to get back to quality with the MK6 like they had with the MK4. I can't understand this - the MK4 was a rubbish, horrid thing. The MKV GTi is a great all-rounder.

Only had one fault - dodgy passenger door lock. Replaced under warranty. Just got our first rattle, from somewhere in the rear left corner of the interior. The 18" wheels seem to corrode easily and are easier to mark than the 17s (which look fine to me). Tyres don't seem to be wearing much at all.

We took ours for a UK roadtrip 2 weeks ago. Driving along with the traffic on A roads, 80mph on motorways I hit 41mpg (our car has done 12,000 miles and has freed up since new). I can get 38mpg without trying and it never falls below 34-35. Super U helps to the tune of 2mpg or so. We don't do lots of miles (6-7k a year) so this is definitely a better choice than a TDi for us.

Servicing isn't the cheapest, but then they all seem to fleece us for what amounts to an oil change these days. Insurance isn't bad though (but its still more thsn my TVR smile ).

I've had my MkV 2.0T GTI DSG for over a year now, having spent months agonising over whether I should or not...

Why I just didn't go out and buy one in the first place I'll never know - it's a fantastic car!

My Mrs uses it as her daily driver - she just sticks it in D and pootles off, nice and docile. But when you want some fun, it's all there in spades! I rarely use the Sport setting on the box - I find it always feels a couple of gears too low and too long to change up for my liking, I do like the sequential shift setting though but hardly ever use the flappy paddles.

Ours has got 26k on the clock and just had its first MOT yesterday. It also had all four door seals replaced yesterday under the last of the mfr's warranty. It's quite common on the earlier cars, they come unstuck from the bottom of the doors.

I wish now I'd gone one with leather, as the cloth trim shows up any little marks quite badly - I've had mine cleaned twice now!

Buy one and enjoy it!

I've had mine over six months and I think it's a great car.

That said the interior is a long way from my old Audi, and the base spec is a bit tight, e.g.

no body-coloured bumpers (hint: get one in black)
no armrest as standard (get one; looks rubbish without)
no multi-function steering wheel -- (it cost £370 for a few buttons!)

I'm nit-picking, but this year's cheap (and I mean cheap!) summer hire car seemed to come with more toys than my PAJ parked at Gatwick irked
