How about this. Driving along and starter motor kicks in by itself and only way to disengage it is by pressing the starter button. This can occur every few miles or maybe not at all on a 20-30min trip, so quite random. Also, push car out of garage, switch on ignition and wait.Eventually after ,say, a minute or two the engine will start by itself! Bizzare, don`t you think ? Had similar problem last year, thought it was the starter motor so changed it, but it had actually blown the 10 amp fuse on the bulkhead behind drivers side [starter relay ?]
Probably covered 1500 miles since, and now its come back to haunt me again.Running out of fuses now so any idea`s? Should i just change the relay, maybe ?

Steve,

The fact that the ignition has to be on for this to happen suggests that it's in the control circuit for the starter relay. If the ignition is not on then the control side of the Starter Relay is isolated and therefore should not be able to operate. The relay switches the supply straight from the battery via the 80A fuse to the Starter Motor solenoid.

Changing the relay seems like the best option as that is maybe where the short is occuring. By pressing the Starter Button you're energising & de-energising the relay which is moving the contacts resulting in the short being disturbed.
