I've got wind of an opportunity to import some farm machinery from the manufacturers in France. They've quoted me a Prix HT which I understand to be the nett price prior to 19.6% TVA.

My understanding is; if we buy from them, can we give our GB VAT number and pay the nett cost, at which point we'd have to pay UK VAT when the goods are imported, which can then be claimed back with our normal VAT return as per usual.

Is my understanding correct?

Presumably there is no mechanism for us to claim back 19.6% French TVA?

Correct.

Quote your UK VAT number and they should Zero Rate the sale.

You will be charged 17.5% at point of entry, which you can then reclaim from the UK VAT authorities.

At the moment there is no mechanism for reclaiming VAT paid to suppliers in other EU countries - unless you have a business centre registered for VAT in that country.

Thinking about this further - what do we pay 17.5% on? I presume an exchange rate is applied before they work out what the VAT is? Who does this?

I dont think you will get charged VAT at all.

I have bought a few computers from a supplier in the EU and they never charged me VAT.

Are you a VAT registered trader?

Who is the "they" you are talking about - the supplier of the goods or HMRC at the point of entry?

HMRC and the Supplier.

And of course VAT registered.
