I was wondering if it's possible to do the above modification yourself. I'm considering getting one of those groovy iPod adapter stereos that put up your playlist and info on the screen. I don't really care about installing the BMW Sat nav system itself, though if it all comes as one I don't mind.
I think the interavee II was mentioned in the other thread.

The Satnav installation is hugely complex and will cost you in excess of £100. You will need:

High OBC Cluster for a non high OBC car: £250
16:9 Monitor: £250
Navigation Computer: £300
BM54 Radio Module: £300
Navigation wiring loom: £150
Misc brackets: £50

It is also a LOT of work. You need all that stuff, even if you dont want nav, because the screen on its own is just a screen - it is driven by the nav computer. It is ridiculous how much it costs, the same retrofit on an Audi is about 400 quid.

The best thing to do is retrofit the 2 line multi information display instead and use an Intravee with that. This will cost you less than 100 quid but you still need to do some complex wiring.

F**k that for a game of soldiers! I'll just get a decent aftermarket stereo.

The E39 dash is not designed for an aftermarket head unit so you need to get a blanking plate. The finished result looks absolutely terrible - it really doesnt suit aftermarket audio.

Why not just buy a tom tom for £100 or splash out on a £250 version. Will no doubt be better than what you try to install anyway - just like modifying a car if you want a fast one buy a fast one.

That's exactly my original point. I was just after the screen for audio/OBC. But it looks like I'll have to buy the whole lot inc. sat nav.
