raw materials traders? [iron ore, coal, coke etc.]

hi,
i know a lot of you city boys hang out on this forum so thought I'd post here rather than jobs/p&p.
i have just seen a vacancy for a raw materials trader on our company jobs database. whilst i am not currently in a commercial role, i believe it would be quite easy for me to at least secure an interview as i know a few of the traders and have also been chatting with group HR about a possible move down to head office. i applied for a trading role a couple of years ago but my application was 'lost' when the relevant HR bod quit the company.
the role involves sourcing coke/coal/ore and metals for use in our manufacturing activities. i gather there is also scope to act as an intermediary to broker deals with external companies if there is profit to be made.
i was just wondering if there are any PHers involved in this area or something similar? it would be nice to pick your brains regarding the role as it has been presented to me [don't mind PMing more details if needed] and what possible career options i would have in future.
if you have seen any of my recent posts i'm in a bit of a dither regarding my career plans as i feel i've gotten into a highly specialist area of engineering which i don't enjoy. my OH lives & works in london so this move would help us out no end. i would also quite like to fast track my salary somewhat [though the initial move back down to grad. level would involve a pay cut].
a good friend works for the same company and business unit but as a trader on the finished products side of things. from the outside looking in his job sounds 100's of times better than mine [including the expense account and entertainment allowance!], but it would be nice to hear what it is really like from those in the know.
any advice would be most gratefully received.
