MK5 Golf GT TDI clutch
Discussion
My daily runner is the above car, and I am extremely happy with its combination of economy and performance for boring daily driving. The only downside, was I thought the engine was a bit inflexible, so I chipped it. Fantastic, totally transformed the engine characteristics, and given it a useful boost in performance aswell, and it still does 50mpg!
That was until about a week ago, whe the clutch started slipping! I suppose I ought not to be surprised really given the significant torque increase, but I have since been informed that the dual mass flywheel is a weakness. The car is still under warranty, so I could de-chip it, and attempt to claim the repair under warranty, but how long will it last when I re-chip it, so whats the point...with anything, but thats another story.
I have been told it will cost about £1000-00 pounds to upgrade the clutch....does this seem right? Does anyone have any experience of such issues??
Thanks
Mark

I would say regardless of the chip you have had fitted this hasnt caused the dual mass flywheel to get damaged, i work for myself and see these cars weekly with dual mass fly wheel problems, you can buy solid old school flywheels and a different clutch and this will eliminate the problem permantly. VW know of this problem and i am sure the car will go in and out of there garage no problem for a claim.
Or you can just give it the dealer with or without the chip (as they are not going to know) and just get it replaced under warranty, it will last a few years more and will have cost you nothing.

Thanks Carl,
I like the car, and want to keep it longer term. I only chipped the car about 6 weeks ago (and it was fine up until about 2 weeks ago), and whilst I have a had a few enthusiastic moments, I definately do not rag it (most ileage on A14 in steady traffic, and besides the performance is strong enough not to have to rag it), and I would say I am a very smooth driver. The car now has about 43K and has done about 2K since the chip was fitted. You have confirmed the potential weakness of the dual mass flywheel.
What sort on money should I have to pay for a solid flywheel/clutch and where from would you suggest?
