Had one (two actually) years ago. My first new cars ever. E778 DGX and G130 TKJ. Both 1.9s.

Loved them, and so did my wife (then my girlfriend; it was the first hot hatch she had ever driven and she's loved quick cars ever since. Had the second lowered, nice wheels, sports exhaust. I was planning on adding a turbo but then I lost it as part of a divorce settlement frown Pissed me off, and the girlfriend (now wife) was devastated. Ho-hum.

I need to get a daily driver to keep the miles and service costs down a bit on the TVR and PING! I thought of my old Pug.

What sort of prices are very well sorted ones going for these days? Will all the old issues have been sorted? I believe that a lot have transplanted Mi16 lumps now; does this make much difference?

I've posted this to 'local' people as I'd love to get to a meet and have a look at a nice one.

So would I, but I'd be scared that I'd end up buying it.

I think that any you look at will be either dogs, or minters, with very little in between.

Will do. I'd love a minter, even though I'd feel a bit guilty about using it everyday.

Fab little cars, eh? And I really think I have a justification for buying! wink

Just had a look on the Classifieds. A fair few about, and one looks promising down here in Dorset. Hmmm.

The Mi16 conversion has been phased out now, although in it's day the car after having an Mi16 engine fitted was transformed perfectly, the age old kangarooing issues solved instantly and of course the adding of an extra 30bhp were noticed, nowadays the main conversion seems to be the GTi-6 engine, minus the 6 speed gear box due to when fitted the 205 losses turning circle, as said there are good ones and bad ones out there and certain companies who 'specialize' in 205's should be avoided.

Apart from power output being less than the GTi-6 is the Mi16 conversion a solid one?

I can't look at them for the same reason!
I'd love one of the stripped ones for track days, but not having anywhere but my parents place (West Sussex!) to store it, means it'd be a littel impractical!
There were a few PHers with them for sale, but being track cars, I guess that's not what you're looking for Lee? scratchchin

Oh and on a sidenote, did you make a decision on the iPhone?

Hi Luke,

No not a track car. A bit of fun nostalgia. It will take a fair bit of cash to get my Sunny GTi up to spec. It runs really well despite 180k on the clock, but I haven't MOT'd it as I know it will cost a few hundred to get it through. Then if I do that, I'll probably start getting it up together properly and spend a couple of grand on it. It would be something special once again, but I think I's like (a) something I don't need to work on straight away, and (b)well, that nostalgia!

Not made the decision yet; work situation might be changing, in which case I won't want to spend a packet per month just for a private line. If I do decide to stay with a hefty private contract, I will go for the iPhone.

Not sure what to do with the Sunny; it doesn't deserve scrapping.

Decisions, decisions eh?
I dearly want something faster, but there is nothing wrong with my car whatsoever (it's French and it hasn't fallen apart! wink) and I'd kick myself if I changed it to something less reliable etc.
Maybe worth looking at something a little more Q-car-esque? I can imagine most 205's have been backwards through hedges or thrashed to within an inch of their life...
Perhaps worth looking at a 205XS? Most of the fun for far less outlay!

ETA I know what you mean about throwing money at the iPhone, I'm such a mug for shiny new toys! hehe

Just do it. I bought one on a bit of a whim about 6 months ago after a look round the classified section. Saw it at 4pm on a Sunday and had put my deposit on it 2 hours later. The car was an hour away. Needs a bit of attention but love it. Feels nothing like driving a modern car which is a nice change.

The force is strong in these ones.....

The temptation to buy a 205 GTi is very tempting, a friend of mine has Miami blue 89 1.9 GTi, fitted with Peugeot sport alloy wheels, and a 1905cc alloy block Mi16 on twin 45DCOE Weber's and a Quaife ATB differential. It looks great and goes like no other hot hatch I've ever been in, so much grip for a front driver, it is amazing how many 'modern' hot hatches it puts in their place!

I'd love one......

No mate, no offence to Darren, but it is much nicer than that!, it has been to Matchams but I think it was before anybody on here was interested in Drift night! he is a PH'er but his profile has only got a picture of his 111s Elise!

Yes the Mi16 conversion is a solid one, the main reason owners are steering to the GTi-6 engine is down to the age and availabiity of the engines, an early Mi16 is an alloy block pre-cat 1905cc with 160bhp the last was 1995cc iron block with a cat and 150bhp, both very tuneable, my old 205 had the pre-cat engine with forged internals, 45 weber carbs and lairy cams pushing just over 200bhp, coupled up with the quaiff diff it was excellent out on track.

I can see myself getting talked into this! Any reliability differences between the alloy and iron blocks? I'd be looking for a quick road car, not for the track. So I assume a lairy cam would be unmanageable in traffic. Or aren't they that lairy? Any hints as to what to watch out for? Is there a )ug forum?

Cams can be as lairy as you want, as for a 205 forum..

I have a 1.6 205 which has been converted to later iron block Mi16 running around 180bhp. Considering the car weighs less than 900kg you can imagine the results. It's mated to a 1.6 GTi box which provides violent acceleration coupled to the stronger 1.9 driveshafts and brakes.

If anything the car is easier to drive around town as It's pretty sedate under 3.5k rpm and doesn't kangaroo at low revs like the original 8v. Drive it normally and you'll see 30mpg or more.
