right to start with i have my cbt in a couple of days and im after a good 125, nothing in the scooter brand will ever feel my buttocks, so thats left me with geared bikes.

i know there are a few good ones out there, but i dont really want one of those old school looking one or a cheapo chinese fake that will fall apart 2 miles down the road.

i was thinking of something along the lines of the power of a RS125(can do over 60) but i didnt really one one of those.

does any one know of a good second hand 125 that have a nice bit of power (for a 125) and dont look too old or pants?

Firstly an RS125 will do alot past 100. Even restricted it will fly past 80.

What are you looking for in a bike? The RS125 is unreliable so not very good as a daily ride, but a good hoon bike. also whats your budget?

Theres obviously the cbr 125 jap reliabilty does about 70, but not a great sports bike.

Yamaha YZF-R125 easily the best looking, 4 stroke so reliable, not sure about second hand ones though.

Cagiva Mito- arguably the fastest 125 incredible styling, but like the rs125 unrelibale.

TZR 125- Cheap, will just about keep up with a mito and rs125, but not the best looking bike. Quite old.

NSR 125- One of the more reliable 2-strokes, whilst still being fast. This would be my choice of bike as it's the best of both worlds.

Finally you could just get a cheap immitation of the CBR such as a skyjet.

Rule of happy biking number

1: Stay away form ANYTHING Chinese/
2: Stay away from anything NOT japanese

TBH it depends on your needs and expectations

Italian stuff is trendy and fst but the price is poor reliability and parts availability.

Chinese stuff is fine if you are only going to use it to take your test and do not worry about residual value. There are pleanty of CG125 clones that will fit the bill.
Much of the Chinese stuff is imported by individuals and sold via Ebay whistle so there is ZERO back up or parts supply in many cases.

If you but a TZR, NSR, CBR you will get a quick, reliable bike with a dealer in most towns and it will hold its price quite well.

A good RS will only just reach the ton. It may say 110 on the clocks but everyone knows RS clocks are terrible for over reading. Also an RS can be reliable if you feed it good oil, warm it up and treat engine rebuilds as maintenance.

my budget is about 1200-1400

as for rebuilds i dont really want to be rebuilding the engine every other week.

as for the honda/suzuki clones i didnt really want one of those as, as people have said they dont hold there value and fall apart.

i wanted something that should be nice to look and and ride but also not drop too much value when i come to sell it in a month or so when i do my full test. so i can put that money when it sells and poss add a little bit more an get a desent-ish 600(not minding having to strip that one down as i will hopefully be keeping it for a while and would like to learn bike mechanics and cba to do loads of work to a 125)

Honda, Yamaha or Suzuki then!thumbup

Have you considered an 125 Varadero or Yamaha XT125?
Not as quick as an NSR ,CBR or TZR but good bikes.

Apologies for once again sounding like im on a crusade about these, but so far I have had nothing to suggest unreliability in mine, and as for holding its value, firstly if youre spending £700 or so, really is resale value such a priority? hardly a big wedge, and also they dont depreciate that much because firstly to get the good deals you have to settle for a LONG lead time - people will pay to avoid that, and people will also be keener to have a bike with a few miles on it such that it is a proven example - because the perception is that these chinabikes are terribad.

That said, from what you want I agree its not a good choice. I think the varadero suggestion is the most appropriate so far, granted its not going to have the pace of the sports 125 but itll be comfortable and reliable.

s'ok tongue out its only from what people have said to me not actually hard evidence. so they 'could' be good, just people have a prejadise(sp?) against them as they are so cheap.

i have been looking up the tzr 125 and i like the look of them, not as thin as a push bike(cbr125:P)
and in my price range.

does anyone know what sort of speeds you will get out of them, (restricted and derestricted) and what they are like in real world driving, i.e from 30-60 or similar?
