For those who have not heard of Alex Roy, he is a regular patron to Gumball Rally's and Bullrun's in his modded E39 M5.

He is now recreating the 1983 USA east to west drive in a soon to be released film; and intended to beat the previous record of doing it in 32hrs 7 minutes.

Here is the original film clip,

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=YzgBwoL53lE

and here is the car he did it in,

May be of interest to the M5 municipal.

This guy is an absolute legend.

I was over in LA at the start of the month and he was parked outside the Standard Hotel in his Polizei M5.

Had a chat with him for about half and hour and he was a cracking fella - telling some good tales from the Gumball.

Hope it goes well for him.

Surely the police will either have to aid him or not be aware of the attempt, will he have to push over the speed limits or is the challenge can he drive solid for 32 hours?

He's already completed the run in just over 31 hours, sometime in 2007. Only publicising it now.

Yeah this is slightly an old story. However.....I love the detail he puts into it. There was a Wired article on him and the cars. It's all spreadsheets, and months of planning. The Top Gear challenges have nothing on him.

It's funny, I got my mate to read the same thing. And then quite a few of us had a stag do to go to in North Wales. And we basically set ourselves the task of getting there quicker than the others on the train. So faster, cheaper, in more comfort etc....it became all spreadsheets (we created special calculations according to progress), Google earth on the laptop (great signal via Orange3G), three satnavs.....Snooper Sapphire...
All for kicks but a lot of fun.......

We won. It's interesting what he does because it's all about planning, not just Smokey and the Bandit. More cerebral than that.

Go to his website www.teampolizeihq.com is well worth visiting for more insight into the runs, google earth plots, video and much more.
Alex's attention to detail is amazing, his personality is brilliant, all in all a top bloke (I'm biased) and road rally legend.
Btw he now has x3 m5's liveried up, x2 of which are identical in spec.

The film is done, I think March time will be the soonest it'll be released over here.....

I wonder why he continues to use the e39 as opposed to the >100+ E60?
