Snell And Dot Helmets, Road Legal?

Hi Guys, I'm after a new Mountain bike Helmet and I want a full face(open) for the extra protection. A lot of them say that they are Dot and Snell approved.

Simple question, does that mean they can be used with Motorbikes on the road/track etc? What does it mean in the UK, or is it a US rating system?

Any help appreciated.

snell is the usa std and not applicable here, but the MSA might still accept them
