I've been mulling this over for a while -- do I sell or do I keep -- My white wedge is in need of a little TLC -- the hoods tatty, the wheels are tatty, the gearbox has seen better days.

I think the 'synch rings have gone in the 'box and need replacing, but a gearbox out job is gonna cost a 'wedge' -- and there's a chance the head gaskets on it's way out, as when taken on spirited runs, it tends to overheat when staying above 4500 - 5500rpm in top. I haven't got the funds to complete the restore now, so do I get rid of it - or do I put it on blocks until I am in a position to get the SEAC back to it's rightful glory ??
Hood = £500
Wheels = £400 - 500
Gearbox = ? £1500 incl engine out
Head gasket = ?????

Advice gratefully appreciated.

Patrick.

Noooooo!
You can't part with one of the best known and probably the loudest SEAC on the planet!

Besides, if you sell at the moment you will get bottom dollar.

If you put it on blocks and the market recovers you are quids in and have your wicked wedge. If the market doesn't recover, you will still have your wicked wedge!

I bought a SEAC in bad need of TLC, the subsequent pain/work has made it MY SEAC and I expect I'll never part with it. If I had done what I was supposed to do and find a decent example I wouldn't be half as attached to it.

I agree, you can't sell a car with these niggles without taking a big "hit" on the value.

Head gasket shouldn't cost too much and you may be able to find a good (verified) second hand gearbox.

Engine & box out replace head gaskets & gear box & refit 2 days = £500-600 + parts.

Thanks for the advice guys,

I have been turned back to the dark side
Can't say when, but the white wedge will be burbling again, esp if the figures are really that low Tim

Now then, about that supercharger........

Glad to here that Patrick,
500-600 is for labour only, but i can give you at least 2 good specialists that can do it for this.

Could you not do the head gaskets, heads off on a V8 isn't too bad - and that way it saves some cash for the 'box?
Even if you get someone to take the engine and box out - you could still do some of the work yourself?

Just trying to save you some dosh!

Patrick, as I sit here, Im looking at a pic of the white beast sitting next to my Blue Beastie Taken in Coombe 4 years ago...
If you were looking to sell, I may be interested. if you decide to keep, then I hope it all works out. I need to retrun the favour of Kemble at some point too, So I hope the new engine when its fully run in, and its ancillaries have been tweaked is as powerful as the old one.

Cheers for the offer Jason,

But with the help from the guys on here, I'll probably keep it, and spend time sorting out the problems.

Hope you get the Blue Beast run in ok......

Did you sell or did you keep? If you kept, what about BBWF?

Patrick,
They (SEAC's & Wedges in general)are hard to sell with a few niggles, at the moment - I tried. However even though it was a decent price and there was a lot of interest I found I was actually trying to put people off which said to me - "KEEP IT" - so I have
Heads off in situe can be a bu**er if the exhaust manifold bolts are corroded (Iron/Alley interface) but it took the team here about 12 hours to do both gaskets in situe and change the cam (front cover off)on my 400.
As Tim sais dropping the engine out and doing this lot out of the car should be do-able with circa £500 labour, Head gasket set circa £35. Box rebuild at competition Trans (Bernie) around £350 or I have a spare but don't know it's state (best to get yours re-built). Hood - is it torn or just fadded. If the latter try Renovo at £50 for the kit. Wheels should be £35-£50 each to sort. The only issue with the engine out and apart deal is the knock on's. I've dropped mine out of the SEAC and find it needs the valves re-seating, pushrods(adjustable) changing and thus the rocker gear, the clutch is on it's last legs and the gearbox input seal needs changing - moral of the story - keep some £ in reserve for the unexpected. Be optimistic - you should be able to do it within your budget and it is worth hanging on to - See you at BBWF.

You have been doing your homework Mrs H

I am keeping it -- although I've done nothing to sort it out yet. I'd love to get to the BBWF, but I don't know if it'll all be done by then. The only thing I really want to get sorted for now is the gearbox & the overheating (which may be something as easy as a thermostat)

Patrick, I've just had my gearbox rebuilt by the guy who designed the thing in the first place! Less than 250 quid, including parts and VAT. Fantastic job too (it's never felt better) You have to take it out and put it back in though. He's midlands based.
E mail me through my profile if you want details

Patrick (or anyone else for that matter) I have an
official TVR series II hood for sale. It's black
and has never been fitted. I bought it to replace
a tatty hood and wrote off the car instead.

So if you're interested, and want a completely original
hood for that concourse look, drop me a line.

I had my wheels dipped, skimmed and painted for £45 each. try your local tyre/wheel companies till you find the right dealer and price.

Thanks for all your help & advice guys -- I shall be trying my best to get to 'The Gathering' in July.
I think for peace of mind, I'll take it to Ray @ V8 Dev - been there before, they do a job job. Just need to sort out the beer tokens for the operation.

The rest of the wedge will be tatty if I make it in time, but at least I'll be able to change gear without the 'grinding teeth noise'
