Is the DSG worth shelling out for?

I currently own/drive a BMW 323 Coupe, I had it on the rolling road the other day and it's pushing around 196bhp & 180lbs-ft, through the rear wheels without Traction control! Yipee, its fun in the wet. However, I've always wanted a Golf GTI! So, I'm going to take the plunge and get one! I've found a lovely one, Black, Leather, DSG. ( this one http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&am...

I drove my mates DSG GTI and Its amazing! However, I feel you might get a bit bored of not changing gears manually?

Anyone's view/comment/vote would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Tim.

DSG isnt all that, I'd stick with the BMW anyday. Rear wheel drive is so much more fun that changing gear like a computer game.

Whilst I think DSG is brilliant - I personally miss stirring a manual box.

If you just want to go as fast as possible it's great but I prefer the reward that comes from knowing I really took a road apart and did it all myself.

I think my DSG is 100% brilliant, but....

My Mrs never takes it out of "D", just drives it like an auto.

The "Sport" setting is great - for about 20 seconds, until you get fed up of the sound of the engine thrashing itself.

The sequential setting is excellent - a real toy.

The paddle shifts are a nice novelty, but that's about it.

Oh, and when parked on a hill, don't release the handbrake when the box is still in "P" - it locks solid and the whole weight of the car is hanging on a dog ring making it very difficult to move the gearshift...

And DO get your firmware updated with launch control - it's completely mental!

I've only experienced DSG once and it was in a 57 plate A3 140bhp diesel Sport. Personally I think it was the worst gearbox either manuall or auto I've ever driven. I'd prefer either a proper auto or a manual. I ended up using the manual on the gear stick as I hated the pedals. Not really sure what it is a but I think it was the fact he change wasn't instant. Obviously it's quick but there's just something about changing gear manualy, more feeling/involvement.
I'd definately recommend driving on for an extended peiod of time, especially on a bit of a blast round your fav roads.

They are easy and quick for changes up the box ... so quick you can't feel them. Downchanges tend to take longer than a normal 'good' auto such as a BMW and are not as smooth.

It is only a 'super auto' at the end of the day and not as involving as a manual but I wouldn't swap mine as I live in SW London and got sick of three pedals in all the traffic !!
