I have been offered a M3 Convertable on a 98 plate with 68 k recorded, SMG in good condition. After market wheels which are not too bad, and very comprehesive alarm.

Hasn't got full history but milage and checks are ok through HPI.

Should I investigate further or run away?

Cant be bad for £5K? Any chance of recovering even a part service history by phoning original dealer, etc?

Miles sound low though....

Look on number plate for a dealers logo, call them and see what mileage they sold it at.

Price/mileage/age combo look good, but I wouldn't bother with an SMG. Not great, more likely to break than a manual and costs an absolute fortune to sort when it does. I'm scouring the ads for late E36 M3s myself right now (though I want a coupe) and there seems, frustratingly, to be a lot of SMGs and bugger-all else.
