Am just about to order some POR15 paint from Frost but am slightly confused. The Frost catalogue mentions that it reacts better with rust however I have seen a thread where somebody used a rust converter prior to POR15. Can anybody advise from experience whether the rust converter route is either necessary or better. Thanks.

Ive got my por 15 and about to start work,As far as i am aware por 15 is very similar to hammerite in that it can be painted on solid rust,so you need to scrape all loose rust and polymer coat off the chassis. The main differance between the two is POR 15 IS THE DOGGIES DOO-DARS.Por 15 can be overpainted if you wish but check on something else first, leave for a couple of weeks just to check there is no reaction between the two paints,Then as everbody else says LOADS OFF WAXOIL
Hope this helps
remember preperation is the key

Thanks for that amyzoe. Thats the way I was going to go as well until the mention of rust convertors. Which colour have you gone for as I am thinking of silver for its filler qualities (according to the por15 site)followed by a top coat of a relevant colour?

POR15 prefers a rusty surface however it will not stick to clean metal and you need to use a product called metal ready which etches the material for a good bond , this site will answer most of you questions
http://prp-porshop.com/faqs.html

2 things if you paint over top use top coat primer

and second the ventilation mask is Very Very important as this stuff rots your brain

i am currently doing a full body off restoration and coating with por15 where neccessary

I've POR 15'd mine and its top stuff. Just a mention tho about Waxoiling ontop and whether this is neccessary afterwards. The main development of POR 15 came from Ofshore oil rig maintenance requirements and the main one being to work well in moist (well pretty wet really) environments. In fact POR 15 works better and harder the wetter it gets.....in theory then waxoiling is superfluous and may inhibit the POR15 performance.

Good Point lordb
But some arears are imposible to paint like on top and behind outrigers so i was going to waxoil these arears and any open tubes with clear waxoil after i paint over the por 15 with a primer and topcoat to match the existing red chassis
I know thats a long time lying down, but if its good enough for the wife then its good enough for me!!!!!!

done my whole chassis in por15, metal ready first which kills rust, acid etches and zinc primes, then the paint itself then tie coat primer then a top coat of bright red paint. the por15 is u.v. sensitive and i was'nt sure if it would be degraded over time, even under the car. they do sell top coat por(not u.v.sensitive) but its only available in black in the u.k. and i thought it might be hard to inspect when the body is on.
cheers
