It is still Marlboro, they can't advertise on the car so they use a representative 'logo'... which is as good as advertising if your brand is as strong and recognisable as Marlboro.

Remember Jordan's Benson & Hedges sponsorship... same thing.

Well it doesn't appear to be very good advertising, as I've always wondered what it was, and everyone I asked about it didn't know either.

I was thinking the same thing. It is still high profile on the overals too.

How much must they still pay (it used to be reported as $50 million+ IIRC )- and not actually be able to physically show the sponsorship ! Takes some selling by marketing to the board, though what else can they spend the budget on.

If you can't advertise fags in China, then where in the world can you still ?

Fags don't require advertising anymore, do they?

Have you not noticed a subconscious urge to buy hundreds of packets of Marlboro though?

IIRC there isn't a problem with advertising tobacco in China but there might be a problem with broadcasting pictures of tobacco liveried cars in the EU.

I would say the tipping point was when it became easier and more beneficial to create a permanent logo circumnavigating the ban on tobacco advertising in some countries.

So post one instead of typing out a useless response.

scratchchin Does this mean Ferarri are operating outside the rules (or the spirit at least)? Again ?

Will they get dealt with by the FIA, will they cocoa.

Given that so many people (myself included) can't see the link, I can't see how they would be punished.

Because they are taking money from tobacco when it (tobacco) is not supposed to sponsor motorsport anymore.

cheers,

i did look, but couldn't find any proper photos of it!
Looks pretty stupid to me, it probably only looks like Marlboro to somebody who's used to seeing the logos on the Ferrari cars. Can't imagine anyone who hasn't seen F1 before knowing what it means

http://www.grandprix.com/ns/ns12393.html

Due to where they're based, plus the ability to quickly change sponsors who are waiting in line, its unlikely. Besides, they aren't the only ones:

McLaren did it 24 years ago:

What about when Mclaren replaced "West" with "East" in the same font? The FIA just wagged their fingers.

EDITED: Just to make my position clear, I think its ridiculous that they can so blatantly flout the laws, but Ferrari could look at past cases for their defence, and are bulletproof in terms of sponsors.

They are the only ones still carrying tobacco branding aren't they ? Anything before the 2006 ban doesn't count surely ?
