Guys

I am looking into getting a RR i know i want a vogue or autobiography but am unsure about the engines.

I own a Z4 M roadster and a Jeep 4.0l Grand Cherokee the Z4 never gets used so am going to get rid of both and buy a range for everyday use.

Now i would like something thats cheaper to run than the jeep which averages 15 mpg on a run to work and back.

Whats going to be the least on depreciation aswell dont want to get stung as bad as i have with the beemer £27k in 2 years ouch...

i know i want a 2005+ model as i beleive there was a major overhual to lots of things then.

Thanks

There was a minor overhaul in 2005 which related to the facelift, for a major overhaul you are looking at 2006>. That's when the diesel engine went from sh*t to yes please by way of a replacement of the old BMW slugger to a brand new LR TDV8 diesel. The model also got Terrain response and some minor switchgear changes, nothing major as it is still the most aesthetic interior found anywhere in a car, even today. Beautiful.

V8 wise, but considering you wanting 15mpg or more, you have the Supercharged engine (10-20mpg depending on driving style) or older cars the 4.4 V8 (BMW engine) which returns around 17-22mpg.

TDV8 is slick, gutsy and sounds wonderful smile

If you can stretch to £30k then i think will have the pick of any tdv8 advertised under £35k, especially the private ones.

This one is a bit high on the miles but from a main dealer

http://search.autotrader.co.uk/es-uk/www/cars/LAND...

There are a number of private tdv8's for sale who, i am guessing, would probably be lucky to get mid £20k's for a trade sale so i dont think your budget will be a problem

I'm picking up a 1 owner '55' plate RR 4.2S tomorrow from a LR dealer, 20k miles. I'm going to fit a LPG kit because I do 25k miles pa. There are several more similar RR's out there at similar prices.

Edited to add - the 4.2S has all the toys as standard and around 400BHP to play with.

Hi Phil

Would be very interested as to how you get on with the Supercharged on LPG

Who is doing the LPG and have they done Superchargeds before

Sounds like a great solution if it all works.

I am using JE Engineering near Coventry who have 30 years experience of Land Rover engines, including converting the Supercharged to LPG. They are certainly not the cheapest. I could easily save £500 on the LPG conversion but have chosen them because of their many years experience/credibility and how well they have responded to my detailed technical questions. Mine is booked in next week. I'll let you know how it goes.

Picked up my LPG converted RR S/C last Tue from JE. Last night after 200 miles I filled up with gas and had used 57 litres which cost £30. I had also used about a gallon of petrol (say £5.50) which is used for cold start and serious S/C boost. All in less than 18ppm for fuel or equivalent to 31mpg (petrol) and 34mpg (diesel) at average current prices.

The fit is excellent. The only external visible item is a filler below the rear bumper which has a black cover and would not be seen by anyone not looking for it. Under the bonnet, unless you know what you are looking for with a torch there is nothing to see. In the boot, the spare tyre has been replaced with a 95ltr tank which holds about 80ltrs of gas. The air suspension module has been moved to the right in place of the cubby hole. All in all it's quite a big job, especially on a S/C due to the lack of space under the bonnet.

The regulator is making a whine sound at idle but JE said they will fix this (its a pressure thing) at the 1000 mile service. The Engine Management light is showing, something I was told would happen initially before the fit, and will be resolved once the system has bedded in at the 1k service.

Other than that, it drives and sounds the same on gas as it does on petrol. Takes about 2 miles in the morning to warm up and switch to gas. The change over both ways is undetectable.

That compares well to my 4.4V8 on LPG. I get about 260 miles per tank (72 litres useable from a 95 litre tank) which equates to around 16-17mpg, equating at current prices to around 34mpg (petrol) or 38mpg (diesel). Never seen the engine management light though?
