I know its not just me, as a few other guys i work with are also experiencing it.

Anyone on here also having Auto Trader website crash their Internet browser?

Its not just my work LAN either, it's done it at home a couple of times. Basically if you filter too many times it locks up and you have to kill your browser.

Tried it with IE7, Firefox and Google Chrome, and it buggers them all up!

Don't they realise that most of us spend at least 50% of our day looking at AT?

yup, all the time. It's their new fancy search tool. without getting too technical it uses something called 'AJAX' which is a method of querying a database without reloading the page. If its implemented badly, without a decent queue system for the database queries, it can cause huge bottlenecks and kill the browser.

Use Google Chrome. I had Autotrader crash once and it just killed that particular 'tab' and kept everything else as is.

I thought Chrome would sort it, but it even froze that, killing the 4 tabs i had open.

Bloody annoying.

I thought it was just me/my tired old laptop! I was browsing with her indoors last night and I kept on having to CTRL + ALT + DEL out of it.

Right PITA!

Thank god you raised it - her indoors would probably be down PC World otherwise, moaning about her tight husband and his slow PC!

I get it all the time at work and when it goes that's it for the day, doesn't matter if it reboots, the scripts on that page just won't work again, sometimes it happens on the first search, others it'll last as long as I want it to.

Haven't had it happen at home yet though.

Same for me on Firefox and IE7.

I just reinstalled IE6 and it's fine on that, I still use Firefox for everything else though.

Huh? Thats just a link to general gassing....

And AT is really pissing me off now. Was almost done with a monster post on Tigerkoi's 'What Car' thread, with links and pictures to about 8 different cars, when AT locks up my whole IE7 browser. Had to End Task, and lost the whole frikking post!!! AAARRGGHHH!!!

Yep, same here too. Complete ste. Wish they'd stuck with the old one. I emailed them, but never had a reply.

Autotrader's new search system is awful, I can only do a couple of different searches before it has a meltdown and won't show anymore results, right pain in the acensorede!

The move to the new style has longer term implications for future developments (or so my rep told me!!).

For example, some of you may have noticed that some dealers (me for one) have gone to a new bolder listing style. Part of that package is when you click into one of my cars, a selection of smilar models is displayed to the left. The new system is utilised to make that happen.

I hear what a lot of you are saying but I know of one customer who bought a car he had never thought of (Saab 9-3 sport saloon diesel from a 318i) because of his selection method.

Yup does it with Avant as well, though it's only started pretty recently, perhaps they've altered something. I do prefer it to their older system, just wish they'd put a little more thought into the implementation.

It's been doing it for months (I use Firefox). Basically it forces refreshes of exponential frequency until it hangs the browser. The web developer should be hung by his balls.

(EDIT: The way around it is to click on the "show results" button - or whatever it's called - immediately you make any change)

Don't get me wrong, i have no issues with the actual search style - i think that its a good system. Its the web developer that i have an issue with - their program is hanging people's browsers country-wide, and that's just not acceptable.

I've emailed them 3 or 4 times, even sent the link to this thread, and nothing back from them.

Its just bad customer service, plain and simple.

So, don't make all your changes in one go, select them one by one, pressing 'Show Results' inbetween each change?
