All,

The manual states that I have to "Connect the short pipe on the MAP unit to the corresponding connection on the throttle body using the rubber vacuum hose provided". For one thing, I don't think I even have any vacuum hose supplied with the car, secondly I can't find any suitable connection for this hose on the throttle body. Is this hose even needed?

Secondly, what earth point can I use for the two spade connectors that come out of the engine wiring loom?

Where is the Oil Pressure Sender?

Could someone with a Sigma take a photo of the engine bay for me? (including the throttle body, the ECU, and the cabling in that area) It would be a great help!

Many thanks ...

HI Just finnished my academy build, can answer your questions.

1. The hose is already fitted to the engine, near the are intake, it slides onto the small tube sticking out of the map unit, it's tight but it does fit.
2. Connect the earth off the battery to the nearest bolt ontop of the bell housing, and the second earth (connected to the chassis under the engine maount) to one of the bolts on the engine mounting bracket.
3. The oil presssure sender is already on the engine just above the oil filter (big white thingy!), you need to find the connection off the wiring loom the mates with this connection, there is only one it will fit.

I also had troube with the wiring on the starter motor, ignore the manual there is no "Black lead", all you need to connect is the red wire from the loom labeled starter, the brown wire from the alternater and the solenoid wire, so only 3 wires in total go to the starter motor, 2 to the large bolt and one to the small bolt (on the starter).

Hope this helps, i think im one of the first to get my academy built for next years season so dont hesitate to contact me if you get stuck.

Good luck

P.S this is my first post on here so hi to everyone!

Should also tell you that the earth leads on the loom (group of black and yellow wires with circular ends) connect to one of the threaded holes near the extinguisher, make sure you scrape off the powder coat where the connections meet, otherwise there will be no Vroom Vroom when you try to start the engine for the first time, took me an hour to figure that one out!

Thanks for the tips so far.

I sorted out the MAP unit, the oil pressure sender, and then got all the steering finished. I now have one last stupid thing I can't find - the brake light cable! The manual states that I should be looking for a green + green/purple pair of wires with a grommet and plugs. I can't see any wires with a grommet or suitable plugs, but I do have a pair of green+green/purple wires with bare metal at the end. Is this right? Did anyone else have this on their loom, or have Caterham not finished this cable properly?

Oh, and one more thing, I've gone and kinked the Fuel Hose frown

I had to trim away some of the protective corrugated plastic around the hose as it was pinching the inner tube, and I've then given it some protection with masking tape to keep it more or less in the correct shape. Will this have to be replaced? How much of an arse is this to do, and should I do it now or can it be left untill Caterham do the post-build check?

Hi,

I've just finished my Academy build as will and can confirm all of the above - it's amazing how different some of the solutions are to the manual isn't it!

I had to call the factory to find out about the earth leads, as well as a healthy selection of missing bits and pieces.

Got there in the end, off to Caterham for the SVA in a couple of weeks.

See you on the 6th Dec for the seminar???

Yup,

I'll see you there smile

On a slightly related note to the seminar, I've been sending out a few e-mails, and Brian James Trailers and Demon Tweeks are allowing me to use their discounts early, which should prove very handy. This Saturday I'll be going to Demon Tweeks to get my Helmet and HANS device, so I can get my car booked in for the chassis modifications with Arch (should cost £200). I'll probably make a post about it when it's all done.

Almost forgot - re: fuel hose, might be better to sort it now. It's only £18 for a newy and fuel is pretty flamable from my recollection:

I could take a picture of my engine bay, but I can't guarantee it's right until the post build check!

All of Jay's comments seem spot on compared to what Caterham told me (I've been phoning them almost daily and this is all new to me!).

Let us know how you get on.

David

PS - Anyone have fun getting their seats in???

Crossed replies...

Yeah, my jury is still out on the HANS device - why don't Caterham supply it so you don't have to go to Arch? Crazy. I'll probably go that route a bit nearer the time.

My garage is a shorty - so I need a trailer with the folding tow hitch, and Brian James want £579 + VAT on top of the trailer and all the extras! I'm going to try and get one second hand.

For the HANS system to be FIA compliant etc, the mounting points for your belts need to be moved. Where they are moved to depends on your height, how broad shouldered you are, etc etc. The angles need to be correct so the belts don't slip off the HANS device.

Although I just thought - since it's Arch who make the chassis in the first place, it wouldn't be *that* hard for us to get measured up before the chassis is build, would it? Bah!

Edit: Oh, and on that other note, I just ordered a new fuel hose. One less thing to worry about.

That explains it then - yeah, they could have just asked it on the order form...

Good luck with the rest of the build, you'll be amazed how quickly the last few jobs get ticked off the list.

RE: Brake wire

The wires you think are for the brakes, they dont have any grommet or ends on them, you will have to bodge something together, using bits of spare grommits in your kit, i kinda had to force a larger grommit in the hole because there didn't seem to be one the right size, also you have to fit the correct ends on the wires i think this is because the wires wouldn't fit through the hole into the pedal box with ends on, i dont think its mega important, caterham didn't seem to pick up on it, they were more concerned about fitting a new gearbox (one with a 5th gear!).

Hope this helps!

Hi guys, just wanted to say hi and good luck with the build process. I hope to see you all on 6 Dec for the seminar. I went for a Caterham build car (as am mechanically challenged), and am due to pick the car up this Saturday.Cheers for now,

I might as well say Hi too.

Got my boxes delivered yesterday, minus a gearbox, but haven't had time to do anything yet apart from find the build manual.
Sounds like I need to check over everything to see what else is missing!

See you all at the seminar.

Hello All, I'm in much the same position as MBW, with arrival of kit last Friday - minus gearbox, uprights and De Dion tube. Front suspension in place but now ground to a halt awaiting bits. Some great pointers above and whilst they weren't for originally for my benefit, I'm very grateful....Hope that you chaps who've built already will take the time to look on here still and lend further advice as I reach hair-pulling point!

Big tip for you all, the rear radius arms go in the lower of the two holes on the body, this is for the race cars only, it dosn't matter if you have put them in the upper holes (the ones the manual says to use), but you will need to change them over before you get on a track. I didn't do this and now have to take both seats out to make the alterations, Bummer!

Guys, have I wired up this Starter Motor correctly?

http://gallery.me.com/stu.moo/100063/IMG_0130/web....

The pic is a bit blurry, but I hope you can see what's what. The 2 large wires are the battery lead (going via the cut off switch), and the brown one coming from the alternator. The smaller one is the one coming from the chassis wiring loom.

Also, where am I supposed to connect the black wire that runs from the rubber engine/chassis mount? Unless I've missed something, I can't see where to put it except for a bolt in the engine mounting arms. Is this right?

You have wired the starter up correctly, the black earth lead connects to one of the bolts holding the engine mount to the engine, it dosn't really matter which one, just the closest one that will reach.
