Hello just asking on here for a bit of advice. Basically I am 16 and have had my scooter a piaggio NRG power dd for around 2 months and am beginning to be fed up of 42mph flat out. Anyway I am 17 in March and would be looking to get a 125cc scooter/bike. The thing I need advice on is will I be able to pay extra on my existing insurance and put the 125 on instead of my 50cc (runs it in September) or will I need to take out a complete new policy as I do not want to waste my money? Also if I look at a 125cc what should I get liked the idea of a rs125 but them seems to implode quite a lot so quite liked the idea of a derbi gpr but not sure really advice (would probably spend around (£1500 max less if possible)?

Yes you can adjust your policy at any point. I have changed car to bike/ bike to bigger bike at various times during my insurance. you just have to pay the extra for the bigger bike.

well thats what I found anywho. best bet it to give your insurance a bell to make sure there is no hidden costs

and breaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaathe....;)

anyway, yes you can transfer the insurance policy over to another bike.

as for the best 125, its a case of what suits you best.

there is plenty of choice, but for around 1500 i would be looking at a solid low miles cbr 125.

CBR could be a good choice if you are going from a 50's scooter, there not that fast but had one park next to my CBR and all i have to say is.

Oh My, a tiny skinny 'pushbike with fairings' like motorbike, saying that, if you are small in stature and size it would go well, looks a bit weird with a 6'4 20 stone bloke on one lol.

Okay thanks for the advice am 6'2 though so CBR may not be ideal. In terms of insurance that is good news will ring up soon and see the cost implications. Was looking at gillera runner 172cc as they look very fast i.e. 0-60 under 7 secs however not sure whether I could legally drive at 17 or not although many for sale are on a L plate suggesting you can drive on a CBT. If not may consider a 125cc the Peugeot jetforce c-tech (supercharged one) seems cool but they may be expensive to fix not exactly sure? What really would be suitable that I can drive aged 17 bearing in mind am 6ft 2 and weigh 13 stone so do not want a push bike whilst sill having decent performance.
Thanks Greg

ummm, i dont think you will be able to ride the 172 one as you are only allowed a 125 max.

if your going for another scooter, try a gelira(sp) just have a look on autotrader bike section.

aaah get yourself an NSR, there great first 125's if you remember to fill up the 2stroke oil every few fill ups and not kain it when cold.

(can get the front up on mine if i slow down, kick it into first in highish revs (bout 7k) and open the throttle fully tongue out (only goes up a TINY amount, thinking about it, might just be the forks extending but still, tis good lol)

If you are the larger type of fellow, you may wish to look at the enduro bikes in 125 style as they are bigger and may suit your large frame better and be more comfortable.

Okay thanks for that think will discount as want something reliable and the rs125's seem to be very fragile to say the least.

Okay have looked at people comments. The NSR looks a nice bike and will be considered and seems to be a decent price as well. With regards to the enduro bikes could someone post an example as not sure what they are exactly are they scramblers? Also anyone know if the yamaha YZF 125 is any good? As whilst they are around 2.7k used at the moment may hopefully be able to get one for my budget at time of purchase and they seem a very nice bike.

yzf 125 is easily the best looking 125 around, sounds superb as it is a four stroke. for the money, you'd expect it tbh I think they're about 3k+ new or something? Not the fastest by a long shot but as if that would stop any 17yo with enough cash to buy one :P

Yeah I think they are around 3.5k new! But looking you can pick them up used with only 1000 miles for around 2.5k and hopefully by March they should be under 2k (hopefully around 1800 probably bit optimistic a more educated guess would be greatly appreciated). When you say not the fastest are they slow? What you talking in terms of Top Speed, 0-60 will be happy as long as does around 80 tbh as long as it gets there pretty quickly.

personally for a 125 i wouldnt bother getting a yzf r125 as you 'should' be moving up to a big bike after a little while (before your cbt 2 year is up)

and if you buy a R125 now, it will deff not sell for the same or nearly the same, thats why I got a NSR125 instead of a CBR125, but the looks, speed and size was also a considering factor.

The NSR, if a goodish exsample, low mileage should hold its value fairly good IF you take care of it, dont crash and thrash the life out of it.

I got a 17k miles 2003 NSR in near enough mint condition [apart from a couple of scratches on the fairing from where the previous woman to own it dropped it, but they will come out easy) for 1.7k,

so TBH Its not really worth it spending out loads on a 125. [I know 1.7k might be a lot in somepeoples opinion but being a minter it should sell for around the same in a month or so when i pass my full test]

I would not be buying now anyway would be getting March and would only consider if used prices were under 2k. With regards to taking full bike test I am not planning on doing as just using as a run around before I go to university as I will not be able to afford to run my own car and are going to be insured on my mums to so can use at the weekends and keep the bike for the weekdays. And I do not see the appeal of a "big bike" as they seem a way to an early grave and personally I do not see the need to have a bike anything bigger than a 125 maybe a 250 as they more than fast enough for the roads and anything bigger is inappropriate for the road. With regards to the NSR it seems a nice bike as well and will be definitely be considered if at the time the r125 is too expensive or I think I am going to lose a lot of cash. This is as only going to have for a year and then when go to University will sell and probably go without transportation until I leave as will not be economically viable for the use it would get.

I'd be tempted to do the restricted big bike test (A2?) as soon as you turn 17 (for £500 you can get through it in three days easily) before the new tests come in, then buy a 250 or a restricted bigger bike, rather than mess about on a 125...

Tbh, i dont think a Y125 / NSR / CBR etc is going to be of any use to you whatsoever.
They're going to be too expensive for what your using them for, it sounds like you don't fancy the hassle of a 2 stroke & the physical size of these bikes is very small!
I'm 5"11 & i've sat on these and they feel way too small for me!
Go for the tourer type of bike, it will suit your size a lot more!
& in reference to you saying about a bigger bike being a trip to an early grave, your more likely to meet an early grave on a 125 as you have less experience, less road presence & less power to get you out of a sticky situation!
