Just got back from business trip, charged battery, ready to go, and the engine would not start. Turns over freely, but wouldn't spark. RAC guy narrowed it down to the loom behind the battery - moving this would mean that the engine would fire immediately when it was turning over. Is it easy for the wires to come loose from the back of the fuse board??? He wondered if it may be the amplifier beginning to fail, but he could find one. He was not sure if the cars have one (maybe combined with the ECU). Any advice? I guess it is a case of battery out and have a quick look???

Any views appreciated...

On mine the ignition amplifier is on the side of the distributor, I understand on some cars it it bolted on the front of one of the rocker covers. Not aware of any with this inside the car (doesn't mean there aren't any!). I would suspect loose relay, loose fuse, loose connector to the ECU - especially if you have previously been in that area eg connecting battery chargers.

Calvin,
I always thought the amplifier and ignition mudule were one and the same, may be wrong. If not, yes you do/should have one. If Serp then it's a small white box on an ally plate (Lucas) mounted in front of the drivers side rocker cover. If Pre-Serp I think it's mounted on the side of the dizzy.
Hope you get it sorted.
