Anyone got the facility to test headers on a car for leaks with a smoke machine or anything else that works? I think I may have a leak that only happens under load and I cant find anything with the car on the ramp at standstill but am getting fumes in the car under load. I dont really want to pull it all off if I can help as its quite time consuming and not 100% sure where its coming from. Any ideas much appreciated.

bung up the exhaust with a tube glued into the middle. Foot pump onto the tube, jobs a racer.

Is this on your 986 Nick?

If so chances are your exhaust is fine (it would be unusual for it to only leak on load).

The most likely suspect would be boot seal or rear lock seal, both common faults on that car.

If it's your 993 my suspicion is a cracked heat exchanger or heat exchanger pipe.

Partially block the exhaust outlet and squirt some Redex into the inlet. That should produce plenty of smoke.

Load would introduce a very small amount of back pressure, easily simulated by holding a wadded up cloth against the tail pipe with the engine running. No need to try to seal it, just hold it against the tail pipes to generate a slight back pressure.

Oliver

On the 968, but its turbo charged and running 951 manifolds and crossover, known for leaks and cracks in headers.

Have tried the rag thing, nothing obvious but we didnt hold it for long as not sure if it would do any damage...

My money would still be on the rear hatch and lock seals though, not many people believe how much smell comes in through them, not to mention if you have any open holes in to the boot area (eg number plate screw holes.)
