WIPERS A MIND OF THEIR OWN!

Ok, took of the steering wheel, checked the ribbon cable, insulated any dodgy areas that may be split. Took of the 6 allen nuts that let you access the button conectors, checked wires all ok. Put the thing back together and back onto the steering hub and the wipers still come on!!! Could it be something behind the steering column binacle? Or, as it only happens when I turn right, something earthing against the indictor cables? With the steering wheel removed and playing around with the ribbon cable or the wires for the switches I can't get the problem to happen. Only when I put the wheel back on the hub. Then again with the wheel removed I can't turn the wheel! Earthing problem? It's driving me mad!!

Nick.
You.re having a lot of problems in the area of the steering wheel. Are those two wires anything to do with it. Not sure whether the black cable is an earth cable for something.

Kojak69,

Could well be. If so any suggestion where I reconnect them under the dash to give me an earth?

cheers

Have you checked the wires right up to switch? There are 2 metal covers on the back of the wheel and the wires a routed behind these. Maybe the switch itself is shorting to the wheel somehow. When this problem occured on mine, it was a tiny bit of insulation that had worn, very hard to see.

Might also be worth checking the continuity of the cables.

Crazycats,

I thought that but surely if I've had the wheel removed and played around with all the cables going under the leather trim of the wheel then the problem should occur? And why only left turn?

Ok if I remove the wheel, disconnect the cables to the switches and then run a cable from the hub on the steering wheel to the centre bolt, i.e. to earth it, I get the wipers coming on. Therefore, do I assume it's the ribbon cable somewhere?

Ok, I posted earlier about a two core wire, black and black and white, that came loose from under the dash. If I earth this, with a bit of cable to the steering hub bolt the wipers start. So, what the hell is this cable and where does it go? Or is this a red herring?

Hi again.
You previously said the 2 wires were one black and one white.
It might be an idea to take it to an auto electrician, preferably TVR.

Thanks for the response. Spoke to TVR Centre and they haven't a clue what the cable is. They still suspect the ribbon cable.

Sure its not an old speaker cable thats been cut, or anything to do with the original alarm system?

Not neccessarily, basically the switch is a switchable earth, so when you hit the button, the circuit is complete, so by earthing the leads they will come on anyway, cos they're supposed to!!!!

I'm running out of ideas now, without seeing the car we're all just guessing, I still think you've got a short to earth somewhere, but like Kojak says above may be time to bit the bullet and call in a professional.

Thanks all. Bob,

Spoke to a guy called Dave at TVR in Blackpool and he suggested that I turn the ribbon cable 180% at both ends to see if the problem moves to the horn or main beam. Done this, reinsulated all the wires to steering buttons and ontop so no contact with the steel plate. Put the wheel back on and the blxxdy fault is still there! So not ribbon cable? Time to visit a dealer I think.

Appreciate all your help

cheers
