Anyone have experience of the new version of idrive yet?

I went to my dealer yesterday hoping to have a play, and was astonished that they did not have a car on which they could show it to me - I suppose it is evidence of how much pre-August production metal is still sitting around.

Autocar's 330d test last week was glowing about idrive 2 - so I expect the graphics are good and it is more intuitive to use. However, in discussion at the dealer I learned that this brand new nav system does not offer full UK post code entry. How can they find it difficult to add a feature which is present in every sub-£100 handheld satnav? And when Ford and VW have introduced touch-screen systems, why do the more expensive German brands expect you to use a single controller?

Will it be possible to upgrade to the new system? Does anyone know if the new software only comes on hard-drive based systems, in which case any upgrade would obviously required a totally new system?

Ace thread here explaining it all...

Looks pretty similar, but much improved.

This is the part that makes me want to save up for a new car rather than get a used one:

3D Mapping.

It doesn't have full post-code entry but BMW Connected Drive (free with Bluetooth) means you don't need it. Search for your location in Google Maps, and you can then send destination info from Google to the car. And if you've searched for a business name (e.g. a restaurant), it also sends the contact info (telephone no, etc) to the car.

I've just taken delivery of an idrive-2 car and it's much improved from the old system.

Very jealous. Improvements do look significant, and chances of upgrade look low.
