Hi all.

I've just brought my first Caterham. Thought I'd say hello as I'm sure I'll need lots of help answering easy questions in the near future!

It's a 1999 VVC. Covered 12500 miles and will be my everyday car for the near future.

Congratulations! Which part of the UK are you in?

I'd recommend joining the Lotus 7 club for at least a year to try it out. Blatchat is a very useful resource and you generally save far more money than you spend on membership in my experience.

Joined Blatchat, seems a wealth of information.

I'm located in Petersfield. Off the A3 between Guildford and Portsmouth.

Car went wrong today! TWICE!

Firstly on my way to a Seven specialist in the area. The clutch went, leaving me in the middle of the road (turning point) out of gear. He came and thankfully got the car back to his garage just around the corner. He adjusted the clutch and on I went to come back next weekend to be shown the mechanical ropes.

Secondly: On the way back home after a short stop over along the way, my clutch went again. This time leaving me in gear (6th) to get it to a safe place.

A quick phone call to family around the corner and I was being towed to their garage. The resting place for a few days until I can get it sorted.

I hope it's the clutch cable which has gone and therefore a 'cheap' fix.

The mechanic did mention the worse case of a gear box problem...

David, welcome to Caterham ownership biglaugh

A few recommended spares to carry in the car:

Clutch Cable
Throttle Cable
Temperature sender

You WILL need them all sooner or later rolleyes

Also worth checking that the ECU fuse has been changed from 20amp to 30amp

Second the suggestion to join the Lotus 7 club www.lotussevenclub.com

Hi.

I've joined the club.

May I ask why this is!!?

Is 20amps under rated and thus keep blowing?

Yes, it was underated, and although it worked for a while, it had a tendency to pop when you stop for fuel or something mid-run (I guess it goes then as it's been running very warm, and the sudden volt drop and current surge when restarting causes it to pop then!).

Caterham uprated it to 30a on newer cars (can't recall when I afraid) but older ones are left for the owners to find out about! Best to check and change before it catches you out.

Glad you've joined the club, not sure where your local area meet(s) is(are) but always worth popping along ot one or two as they can be quite different crowds at each. You're welsome to come over to Kent if you fancy a run in the summer; a group of us usually go to Ringlestone, Eynsford and Penshurst.

Have fun!

Nice car.......thumbup

Just come back from holiday in Malta, there was a very nice Caterham sprint lick parked up in Buggiba square, in Green/yellow "Prisoner" colours, with two yellow bonnet stripes......

That's a very nice looking 7.

Drive with care on these slippy roads and enjoy in good health.
