The left side exhaust is nice and clean (except for a bit of soot), but the right hand side has oil deposits.

Does anyone have any idea if this is normal?? (I suspect not) Any idea what the problem is? Any idea of what the fix is going to be, and what its going to cost me?

TIA!

The fact that one side is clean is good news, the exhaust runs as a single pipe from the engine to the centre section, the individual tails have no relevance to individual banks of cylinders, if it was serious i would expect both pipes to have residue, any smoke from the tails ? or mis-fire ?

There's no smoke during driving.

Although there could be smoke upon start up when cold. Although I'm not sure if its steam/soot.

I did notice there was an exhaust leak, so took it to a mates garage and up onto the ramps. There was a significant leak around where the down pipe meets the main exhaust (single section pipe).

We sealed the join. Not sure what he used. Could this be the source of the goo?

We also noticed the initial signs of what could have been a hole developing, so this got welded - just to be on the safe side.

I have noticed it uses oil, so I was thinking that a seal had gone. But as you say, its only on one side.

The car is actually up for sale and I'd never noticed oil in the exhaust b4. It sailed through its emissions test only last month. It makes me wonder if the guy was trying to pull a fast one. ...?

mmm...
