Hey guys,

I need to get two new rear tyres for the ro (04 CV8). I've had Avon zz3's on all round and have been impressed with them, but I fancy a change. Looking at 250 quid for the pair. Any suggestions?
I can easily get a pair of Falkens, but after reading about them on here i'm not so sure about them.

Dont waste your money, they are ok tires but just dont seem to work well on Monaros. Been there done that!

Got Dunlop SP Sport MAXX on mine this time and I have to say they have been excellent in the dry and wet. Got them from Event Tyres and they came to me to fit them.

Folk with 18" wheels seem to like the Falkens. Those with 19" wheels often say otherwise.

So far, so good with my 19" Kumho KU31s. Done about 350 miles so far. Also fitted by event tyres. 235/40R18 95Y KUMHO KU31 £435.82 for four from them according to t'internet. I assume that's the correct cv8 size.

No, they are crap on 18" too, especially in the wet. I have Goodyear Eagle F1s and they are much better IMHO.

Wormus used to like them... From an earlier thread.

Whats up Wormus? Falken stopped the endorsement fees or something?!

I wrote that when they were new. They do work well when you first get them but by the time they're 50% worn they are terrible. In the wet I had practically no grip so in the end I swapped them to the front where they seem ok.

We can all change our minds...!
Mine (falkens) were really crap, but the last few thousand miles on them have been the best. I think with the "cheaper" tyre a few extra PSI goes a long way in terms of handling.
The easy answer is bite the bullet and get a premium brand - dunlop/continental/michelin/bridgestone/pirelli etc...
Me, i've opted for some 255/35 nexen N3000's. yet to scrub them in, so cannot comment.
Doing it more as a test with the 255's, wanted to go wide to feel the difference (good or bad). Need some dry scrubby road to heat them up first though....

Your best bet for the money will be Goodyear F1's

I don't want to touch F1's as i had a pretty serious problem with them a while back where the sidewalls wore only on the inside rim and failed at high speed. a few people have had the same problem with them.

you probably had baked the tyres tbh rather than them just going suddenly off so soon

Possibly, all I know is they were like bakelite in the middle and I got loads of wheelspin on Mark's dyno during one particular winter run. I find the Goodyear F1s much, much better and they are still cheap.

I'm just about to change my tyres and although the Nexens lasted well, you DO need to make sure they are warm before you start to "press on". From cold they are dicey, but even with FI now they are ok when warm.

Wow, yeah, I had exactly the same problem with the F1's where they had split on the inside of the wall. Not sure why it was only the insides yet. Reminds me that I have to check the ones the front again, to make sure they haven't split either.

Bit over the range your looking at but Mitchelin Pilot Sports seem brilliant to me, wet, dry, hot cold they just grip!!! when hot they just grip more and more!

500 miles in and 40 psi (rears and normally got a boot load of crap and a full tank) and the nexens are pretty good. Predictable when cold and wet, and yet to find the proper upper end of grip when warm so far. roundabout/Island "turn in and poke" trials have all been pretty tame so far. not near as much fun as the whooooaahhhh Falkens!

Just make sure you go for 'extra loads' otherwise ... well extra loads of problems
