How are side impact bars fixed to the seven? Are there location holes on the chassis frame? I am thinking that one on the driver side would form a useful leverage point for getting out the car (old knee joints etc).

David,

SIB is mounted at the rear to the boss that was used for the diagonal seat belt mounting and the front mounting is on the underside of the floor panel but bolts through the cross member that sits just in front of your seat (well, that's how it is on my '93 chassis). You may also have a boss under the panel near where the scuttle joins the side panel, so that the middle of the SIB is also connected.

Don't forget that if you have full doors then you won't be able to open then.

See various photos on my website

Thanks for the info. I prefer using the doors in the winter so I will just have to struggle getting out.

Worth noting that's the old sidebar. There's a newer one that's cutaway so you can still use the doors

As seen here

I currently have a caged SLR cage on my car, but am planning on running around for a while with just the FIA roll bar fitted. Is it possible to fit the side impact bar with the roll bar? Where does it pick up on the chassis?

Also, does anyone know if caged produce the SIB, as Caterham want £165 for a few bits of bent tube. Another p1ss take by the Caterham pricing dept....

If you've got the SLR cage, I think the front legs pick up at the scuttle cross bar just behind the bonnet, whereas the side impact bar picks up at the back of the scuttle at the same point as the front leg on the roadsports cage, so unless you've got roadsports cage mounting points you might struggle with the front mounting point.

Also, Caged produce the Bar that I've posted, but the old 'high level' sidebar was made by Safety Devices I think

OJ, thks.

I'll just drill through the chassis rail and fit a sleeve inside the cross member. no worries!

I'll contact Phil at Caged for a price!
