Currently looking for E46 M3 convertible. Have checked BMW AUC and they have a few, but two indie companies seem to have good stock in: Independant Motor Company and Trevor Jones Cars. In fact, both have cars I like the look of at the moment, but both are a good 50 miles from home for me. They seem to be well established and often carrying good stcok, so I'm assuming all ok. Before trundling all the way round, has anyone here got any other recommendations/ points please.

TIA

IMC - avoid. I bought a proper dog from them. Luckily I paid on my c/c and was refunded when the engine went pop after 7 days.

Seriously?!? Bl00dy hell! That sounds pretty extreme! I thought they gave a warranty with their cars though?

They do! but they try to get out of everything. On my 5 month old Z4MC one of the alloys bubbled and they tell me its not covered because it was refurbished therefore not the original M Wheel (which i was never informed of when i purchased the vehicle). Also my boot was out of alignment which after 11 weeks they have just fixed after BMW offered to pay the dealer. So be warned!

Yeah, i bought my first M3 from IMC too. I'm not convinced they do any kind of pre-sale checks. The car had a few niggles which they generally weren't that interested in (although they did take it and and give me a loan car in their defence). Then once the 3 month warranty expired the niggles turned into problems and I ended up getting rid of it as a result. 3 months really isn't anywhere near enough on a car that costs so much to run.

They also tried telling me that the tyres were fine, when they were clearly, visibly shagged. Then they tried putting some really cheap, dodgy rubber on (I ended up paying the difference to have them put some proper boots on).

An AUC car will cost you more but it will go through a good, proper inspection first. And if it then causes you jip then you've generally speaking got 12 months genuine piece of mind. That's what I did 2nd time round and it's been by far a much more pleasurable experience. The cars been in a couple of times for bits and pieces but all sorted under warranty, and almost offsetting the higher price they charge.....

Each to their own though. Depends on your attitude to risk i guess. There are a lot of folks out there who have a real problem with main dealers for some reason too.

Do not use IMC. Don't want to go into it here.

I would always pay a (smallish) premium for a BMW AUC car, you will have no worries and can then drive it without fear of large bills.

I went the AUC route on an M care, probably paid a bit too much but the peace of mind is worth it.

IMC are a funny old bunch.

Promise so much, good sales tactics, relatively pleasant and then their aftersales seems to be totally shocking.

I would imagine that they get lots of cars from dealers and auction and do their very best to spend as little as possible on the cars in order to obtain max mark up.

But I owned an IMC supplied e30 m3 which was mint but I didn't buy it from them.

With the current market as it is, there are plenty of m3's about.
