Whats my E39 Dash tryign to tell me/ pixel repair cost....

Like most 9 year old E39s, my dash display just under the speedo has pixels missing (I knew this when I bought it, every E39 I had a look at suffered) Anyway its been displaying this message the past few days when ever I turn the key, "CHECK LOWER(i think it says lower) ****S". I do have the offside headlight out which the dealer I brought it off is going to fix as it should have been repaired by them anyway last MOT, could this be it? I'm thinking "****S" could mean "lights"? But Lower Lights, that doesn't sound right?
Also I know its hundreds of pounds for a repair or replacement, but how much should I be paying and where is best to go? I don't really want to attempt something this complex myself because I'd probably break something. Its not actually that annoying, mileage and trip counter work most of the time and MPG info is displayed on the center console but it would be nice to have it all working.
