Callan.T89 said: No No No, none of the above, get an original Audi S6 for well under £2K in good nick.
Strong reliable cars that will do intergalactic mileages with no problems, engine is 230bhp standard and can be chipped to 280bhp no problems.
Also sounds great, looks discreet, massive inside, Quattro 4WD, and a badge with heritage.
Don't get me wong I love Legnums/Legacy's/Stagea's/850's but the Audi is the one to go for. Mind you, I think for less than £2k you are getting one that needs bits and bobs. Mine was £1500, and so far I have spent about £1000 on it. Cheapest on here at the moment is £3,300. Autotrader has one at £1995, an Auto. ETA its also a saloon...

Some good and 'different' suggestions here! I think the Impreza is the front runner, even I'm liking the idea of a quick estate now after looking at some of these!

As a V70 T5 owner I am biased...
I picked up a cheap (just over £1k) V70 T5 just over a year ago, trade sale from a dealer. Some light mods and the car is producing 273bhp (dyno tested) and there is a wee bit more within easy reach.
Goes like stink considering the size and weight. A wee bit thirsty if you keep your foot in, but thats the trade off.

Get a V6 Omega. RWD, all the toys, comfy, and much fun in the wet. You'll have A LOT of change from £2K, and it doesn't have an expensive turbo to fail on you....

had a similar dilemma myself and went for the e36 328i touring, love it, has such a nice chassis balance on it.
Also considered a scooby wagon.

Lord Pikey +1 Had a V6 4Motion for 2 years never missed a beat not torquey but top end was impressive. Still recall blasting past a Merc on a completely frozen road and the driver staring at me in surprise.

Are they actually remotely interesting to drive? The Avensis in normal guise (which let's face it is a great workhorse), is as dull as dull can be, painting it magnolia would make it more exciting it's that dull. As far as drivers cars go, it has to be down near the bottom of the all time greats list. Are these actually interesting to hustle along like the Stagea, legnum or Subaru equivelents are or are they just bland boxes with a bit more poke than normal?

At the end of the day all these cars are a compromise for the family type guy to have some level of performance and handling at the sacrifice of a nice shaped coupe body typically mine is a celica GT4 wrapped in an avensis shell in the same way a stagea is a skyline in an estate form.
if you hate the avensis you will not like the caldina but as my previouse car was a GT4 this was a logical move for me :-)

A mate of mine has a Caldina GT-T, looks pretty much identical to yours above. Slower and thirstier than my Legacy (it is an auto though which doesn't help) but being a Toyota should be cheaper and easier to work on if anything goes wrong. Being a single turbo its much laggier low down than the TT Legacy, not much below 3.5k whereas the Legacy is making noticable boost by 2k.
ETA: To expand on fuel economy comments, I have no trouble at all getting over 30mpg from the GTB. Touring range is also helped by having a 64L tank compared to 50 (iirc) in the Caldinas.
