About 650 cars auctioned at Manheim Colchester today. Where the Fleet Managers were present, a lot of cars were being sold at less than reserve.

Included today, was Manheim's quarterly Prestige sale; about 60 cars today. Given the many threads observing and speculating on the market for premium cars, I thought I'd grab some 'live' data for you all. Have listed some of the better cars below together with pics if I managed to take one. (Just phone pics and in poor light, so not great quality, sorry)

Quite a few of the cars prices are marked 'provisional'. A lot of these occured as the vendor had requested the auctioneer to submit the highest bid to them rather than leave a reserve. Also, there's a buyer's premium on top of each successful bid price. If you want any more info on any of the cars, do ask.

Across the entire auction - prestige and regular - the model which 'stuck out' as having very solid demand, is the Range Rover - both full-size and Sport variants. Almost all of them easily hitting reserves.

Anyway, here's some of the highlights:

2007 07 BMW 750i £17,950 provisional

2006 55 Porsche Cayman 3.4S £21,900 SOLD

2007 07 Porsche Cayman 3.4S Tiptronic £24,000 provisional

2007 57 BMW M3 Coupe 13k £32,000 provisional

2003 03 Aston Martin Vanquish V12 460bhp coupe £45,500 SOLD

2004 53 Aston Martin Vanquish V12 £47,000 provisional

2007 07 Aston Martin Vantage Sportshift Roadster £53,000 SOLD

2005 55 Porsche 911 (997) S Tiptronic 355bhp coupe £30,600 provisional

2008 08 Porsche 911 (997) Turbo Cabriolet 480bhp £74,500 SOLD

2006 06 Maserati Quattroporte V8 Duoselect 400bhp £31,000 provisional

2005 05 Ferrari 360M Spider £55,250 SOLD

2007 57 Rolls Royce Phantom 453bhp Convertible £186,000 provisional

2005 05 Lamborghini Gallardo 500bhp coupe £62,750 provisional

2006 06 Mercedes CLK 63 Tip Auto Cabriolet £30,000 SOLD

2007 56 Bentley Continental Flying Spur W12 560bhp £53,250 SOLD

2007 57 Audi R8 R Tronic £65,500 SOLD

2007 07 Jaguar XK 4.2V8 Convertible £32,750 provisional

The star of the show (kind of confused)

1999 Ferrari F355 Spider (this car was entered by Essex Police. It's LHD, and has been recorded on the VCAR register TWICE in its life; both times as a CAT C total loss!) Went for £25,100!

Others (sorry no pics)

I love the 750, I can't imagine it's value was helped by the release of the new 7 Series.

A few bargains there, but didn't really think the 355 was one of them.

Excuse my lack of knowledge.

How does a phantom Drophead end up at a Maheim auction?

My favorite would have to be the CLK63. Great car for 30K

Why wouldn't it? The Colchester site is the biggest car auction in Europe. Each quarter they hold a prestige sale. It's a prestige car. People rarely buy cars like that; they lease them through a fianance company like Lombard or similar. The finance houses then clear their stock through auction houses.

All that glitters and all that...

I am sure that there are some bargains to be had at auction, but as tonker et al have highlighted before, add in the buyers premium, add in the service that may be needed, the tyres etc, and then factor in you have no warranty and the convenience of dropping it back off at the dealer to fix that broken electric window etc.

That's before taking into account a day off work to travel to the auction (without knowing if it will result in a purchase), arranging payment (and if its not a cash purchase having loan money ready and waiting in the bank, again hoping that you win the car you have eyed up on the auction list), and then travel expenses to and from the auction house. You also need a mate/family member in tow in case you come home in 2 cars...

If you go along with a heap of cash and aren't specific on what you want to buy that day I dare say you could walk away with a bargain, but otherwise I think you risk wasting a lot of time that could be spent more productively chasing something thats a little bit cheaper once all costs are factored in.

That car was an absolute bucket. Sounded rough as hell, oil pressure very low, as already mentioned written off twice, Police sale, left hand drive. Yet despite all that two blokes lost leave of their senses and got in a bidding war over it. As the bidding got higher they kept making huge increases in their bids to try and put the other bloke off. It was painful to watch.

550 looks good value, but the plate makes me wonder how well it's been cared for.

The car looked Ok, it was a private entry, warranted mileage with Ferrari history but it needed a big service.

confused What has the plate got to do with the owners ability to care for the car?
NI pikey plates are not generally fitted to the pampered playthings of the aristocracy.

Why would a less than 3 year old, UK dealer supplied car not have a warranty - regardless of if it has been sold through an auction?

Cars all retain their manufacturer's warranty, irrelevant of number of times sold or method of sale.

Bang on.

The trouble with stereotypes is they are usually based on fact.

It was awesome; kicking myself for not getting a photo. It was immense - wide, high and so, so long. Lovely metallic dark red/burgundy. Perfect mid-life crisis car biggrin
