Hello All, Picked up my 1999 Griff 500 a couple of days ago ( found and checked over by Rob Ingleby ).

1) It needs 12K service , any recommendations ( Derby Area )
2) Heavy Clutch & Gear Change is this standard ?
3) I would like the exhaust to sound more like the pre-cat cars ( Not too loud though ), what mods have people made with what results.

Congrats Das, welcome to the fold.
1) Can't help, not my area
2) Yes - but try another if in doubt
3) (a) decat. About £500. Quicker throttle response but not strictly legal and you will fail a pukka MOT. (b) remove baffles. About £80 and still legal.

However, you will never get a 500 to sound exactly like a precat as the Y-manifold is a different shape. But you can certainly give them their balls back!

hey, they're cool aren't they!

1. Not my area...
2. Not in my opinion - the clutch is heavy compared to a Fiesta but about the same as a Porker 993, i.e. as you'd expect for the performance. Personally I reckon the clutch is fairly light given the torque capacity. Then again mine is fairly worn.
The gearshift is 'meaty' but should feel really slick (well mine does). Every gear should snick into place, with very little free play.
3. Seems to be a few options: decat (pretty irreversible on the Griff as you need to gut the manifold); removal of centre box (loud!); removal of some packing in centre box; sleeving of centre box. I'm tempted to do something to mine, but still want it to be OK for track days, so I've been humming and hahhing so far...

Hello das

I'm in Derby!

I bought my (pre-cat) Griff through James Agger earlier this year and it was serviced at Joospeed (Chesterfield).

Not sure whether Julian is still doing servicing though. I seem to remember a note somewhere about this.

I've heard RT is a good option if not.

If you remove baffles, can they be replaced?

Like the retired freedom fighter says...

Joolz at Joospeed in Chesterfield took the baffles out of mine and it sounded a lot beefier... cheapest option and you can carry on with more if you want to. I think you will like the result though.

I would also recommend Joolz for looking after your car... knows em and loves em, but I know he's getting real busy with performance stuff, but give him a go anyway.

Oh, welcome to the rumble!

re. 2) I thought the same about mine after picking it up. Few weeks later noticed a small damp patch in the footwell due to clutch master cylinder leaking; now changed.

Stick your head down into the footwell and check the master cylinder isn't leaking. If it is, then you'll see clutch fluid (feels oily between your fingers-don't confuse with a water leak!) on the cylinder (recognised by black round seal behing clutch pedal.)
Also it could be running down the pedal arm. Check your carpets at the back too, as they can pick up fluid whilst the arm is
pressed down.

Clutch is now nice and heavy.... .. but I'm confident it's OK...
Cheers

Cut the middle boxes open - pull all the wooly stuff out, weld boxes back up, sit back and enjoy the sound.

edited to add, if you really want that pre cat sound V8 Developments do a version of the old manifold sans cats that will bolt straight on to a 500. Find a good Independant to do your servicing and MOTs and Eric's your lesbian aunt

look at where the exhausts go from two into one at the rear, this is the baffle where the end is cut off and various things can be done to make your car sound more interesting

fantastic, thanks guys. This is much more fun than modding the Lotus Elise.

Mmm, exhaust, dash, steering wheel, stereo, nice oil filler caps. Now where did I leave that quote for the supercharger...

oh crap, I'm broke. Again.

what do you think needs doing with the suspension....

I haven't had the car on the track yet (next month) but I haven't detected anything evil about the handling.

Then again, I'm hardly likely to know
