Can anyone advise on whether it is worth getting the multichanger moved out of the glove box and having the ipod cable fitted? This is the proper one, not just an aux.

Will idrive access my playlists, songs, and ipod menus?

What's the sort of cost I should be paying to have this done and is this the best way or is there a better method I should go for via a 3rd party? (looking to do this with the BMW dealership before I pick up)

We've got the latest BMW IPod-Idrive interface installed in our E61. It works pretty well, does pretty much all you expect, displays all the details on the Idrive screen etc.

Downsides are the navigation is a little bit slow&clunky with the Idrive, and the Random Play mode isn't as useful as it could be, because the next/prev buttons don't work as you expect.

It's fairly expensive (about £200 for h/w plus about a bit more for fitting), but I don't know of a better integrated solution.

I've been quoted £397 by the dealership to fit... they reckon over £150 for the cable then it's several hours fitting then reprogramme iDrive.

I think we paid about £400ish total last Jan. They did the parts at cost as we bought the AUC car at the same time, and we paid for installation (2-3 hrs labour, mainly due to I-Drive software). Our car didn't have the CD changer, which presumably adds to the labour on your quote.

If you're buying an M6, might be worth trying to get a bit more of this included in the price you're paying...
