Jump starting / Battery charge

I have just jump started my 840, can I charge the batteries whilst still connected? Can I use some sort of optimate, or do I need to take both out? Sorry this may be a stupid question for some, but I have no idea. I have owned in the past cars that can be charged whilst still attached.
